Safety information

Section 2 Safety information GUID-11CD92DF-9C18-461B-9A5F-61B1467F093E v1

This section has information on the prevention of hazards and taking backups from the system.

2.1 Backup copies GUID-F4AB7473-3BEE-41D6-BCEE-E7F54A8D34E5 v1

2.1.1 Taking backup copies GUID-2B6655EE-E041-4A2C-A8D2-F63F9EDCC95D v1

We recommend taking backup copies before making any changes, especially ones that might have side
effects. Backup data needs to be copied to another place.

Backup copying makes it easier to restore the application software in case of disk crash or other severe
failure where stored data is lost. It is therefore recommended that backup copies are taken regularly.

General best practices for backing up system is to have at least two backup copies. A new backup
is copied over the oldest backup. This way the latest version is always available, even if the backup
procedure fails.

Detailed information on how to make a backup is available in the user manual.

2.2 Fatal errors GUID-DF166F76-B61D-45D4-8E40-4A50A6B72A1A v1

A fatal error is an error that causes a breakdown or a locked situation in the SDM600 program
execution.

2.2.1 Handling GUID-B0F0074E-3AF4-49FC-AB2B-1A916B516C6E v1

In case of a fatal error:

1. Write down the possible error messages

2. Copy the folder Log under SDM600 installation directory
3. Open Event Viewer and look for SDM600 errors under WindowsLogs Application folder
4. Restart the PC where SDM600 is installed

Avoid shutting down the PC by powering off the PC directly as this may cause damage on the
base system file.

Report the program break-down together with the possible SDM600 error messages and the log files
under the log directory to your SDM600 representative.

3.1 SDM600 server installation GUID-CE18E0B0-4BCC-4E70-8AFF-CAE3D15DCC4B v3

SDM600 server installation provides information that is needed to set up the SDM600 product on a
computer.

SDM600 is a server application and it may interfere with other server applications, for
example, SYS600. If possible, avoid installing SDM600 side-by-side with other server
applications. When this is not possible, be aware of the possible configuration clashes. For
instance, if another web application is already installed on the same PC, the SSL port for the
SDM600 application can be changed using the IIS configuration tool on the PC.

Installing SDM600 side-by-side with other demanding applications (such as SYS600) may
impact the user experience and/or overload the system. If possible, avoid installing SDM600
side-by-side with other demanding applications. If the situation cannot be avoided, make
sure the HW performance criteria are met when installing SDM600 side-by-side with other
applications.

3.1.1 Hardware and software requirements GUID-C1A9A240-3CE8-4C40-9227-D597A8178B2F v3

The SDM600 hardware specifications are similar with recommended specification of supported
operating systems. Notice that SDM600 will run on host with minimal specification, however to ensure
stable and seamless operation, the minimal and recommended hardware requirements are documented
in the SDM600 technical summary.

SDM600 is a server product and designed to run continuously. Therefore, to ensure the
availability of SDM600, it is important to set the power management of the computer to full
performance and without sleep or standby mode to achieve smooth operation.

SDM600 is best deployed on a machine that has continuous operation capability (machine
with server specification).

SDM600 is a server product. It is important to deploy SDM600 on a dedicated PC that fulfills

the hardware requirements mentioned before.

As Microsoft SQL Server 2012 has reached its End-of-Life support on July 12, 2022, to ensure the
safety and security of our products, it has been decided that we no longer support Microsoft SQL Server
2012 starting from SDM600 1.3.1.

As communicated in September 2022, starting from SDM600 version 1.3.1, SDM600 will only support
Microsoft SQL Server 2019. SDM600 is delivered with SQL Server 2019. While updating from an older
SDM600 version, the SDM600 installer will check whether Microsoft SQL Server 2012 is installed for

The SDM600 installer will require the user to configure the Microsoft SQL Server database
password either during the first installation of the product (clean installation) or whenever
updating from an older installation where a non-secure Microsoft SQL Server database
password is detected.
Once a secure password has been configured, the installer will no longer prompt the user to
configure one.

LIMITATIONS APPLY!
When configuring the Microsoft SQL Server database passwords for SDM600 instances
belonging to a hierarchical and/or hot/standby system, the configured passwords must
match.
The Microsoft SQL Server database password can be further edited at a later stage from
the Application Administration Tool. Refer to the "8DCB000001 - User Manual" for further
guidance.
When SDM600 instances are configured as hierarchical and/or hot/standby, failing to
configure the same Microsoft SQL Server database password in each SDM600 instance
will cause the data synchronization to not work.

Even though the Microsoft SQL Server database passwords can be edited at a later stage,
make sure to configure matching passwords for all the SDM600 instances that either

1. already belong to a hierarchical and/or hot/standby system or

2. are planned to be configured in a hierarchical and/or hot/standby system.

Enter the required data and click Continue to proceed with the installation.

The SDM600 requires a license. The available features are protected by a license file that has a .paf
extension (the file name can be different). The operation of SDM600 itself is controlled by the USB
hardware license key that acts as a hardware based protection key. The .paf file and the USB hardware
license key allow the user to use the software immediately after the installation is completed.

It is important to obtain the SDM600.paf file for SDM600 from your SDM600 sales
representative.

To use SDM600, simply import SDM600 license using a feature in the installation wizard or manually
copy the .paf file received from your SDM600 sales representative to the directory <Root of installation
folder>\ABB\SDM600\paf\. By default, it is located under C:\Program Files (x86)\ABB\SDM600\paf\.

Figure 21: HASP Sentinel License Dongle

An SDM600 USB hardware license key can only be used to run the SDM600 application on
one computer at a time.

Both the hardware dongle and the SDM600.paf license file should match each other. A
mismatch between these two licensing mechanisms leads to the dysfunction of SDM600.

Do not alter the .paf file, as this leads to dysfunction of SDM600.

It is important to ensure that there is only one license paf file in the license directory. If there
exists more than one license paf file in the license directory, SDM600 will not work and a
subsequent error message on licensing error will be shown.

3.4 Folder structure GUID-7C12AA97-1A6A-4DBE-866C-ED404763844F v2

SDM600 is installed to the Program Files folder of your computer:

• C:\Program Files\ABB\SDM600 (on 32-bit Operating System)

• C:\Program Files (x86)\ABB\SDM600 (on 64-bit Operating System)

It is highly recommended not to interfere with or make any unnecessary changes or add
files or folders to the SDM600 folder structure. Any unwanted deviation from the original
installation may lead to SDM600 not operating properly.

3.5 SDM600 upgrade GUID-0EB65AEE-097F-4AB3-AB11-32DCDDC80922 v1

Recommended method of the SDM600 upgrade is to install new SDM600 package without uninstalling
previous version of SDM600. Upgrade process looks very similar to the first time installation.

During the upgrade process, you may be asked for administrator credentials. Please provide
the current administrator login and password.
