G 10 Physics Lesson 13

This document outlines a Grade 10 Physics lesson on measuring time using a simple pendulum, presented by teacher Chilufya Humphrey. Key concepts include the definitions of length, oscillation, period, and frequency of a pendulum, along with relevant formulas and a quick exercise for learners. The lesson concludes with a summary of the material covered and a farewell from the teacher.

Introduction (30seconds)
(Video)

Hello learner
Welcome to Grade 10 Physics lesson. This lesson is under
the topic Length and time. I am your teacher Chilufya
Humphrey.
In the previous lesson, we learnt about time, devices used to
measure time and time conversions.
In this lesson, we'll look at how to measure time using a
simple pendulum.

Let's get started!

FX(“2” )
Lesson development
Learner, what do you understand by simple pendulum?
X2 PSR
A simple pendulum consists of a bob or a weight hanging
at the end of a string or wire. When the bob is pulled aside
and let go, it swings back and forth under the influence of
gravity as can be seen.
[video showing an oscilating simple pendulum]
Let us now look at the terms associated with the
simple pendulum
 Length of the pendulum: The length of the
pendulum is the distance from the point at which the
string is suspended to the center of the bob.
 Oscillation: an oscillation is the movement of the
pendulum bob from point A to point C and then back
to A
 Period (T): period is the time taken by a pendulum
bob to make one complete oscillation. Period is
given by the formula;
t
T= n
Where, T = Period
t = time
n=number of oscillations
Time is measured in seconds (s).
 Frequency (f): frequency is the number of oscillation
made per second. Frequency is given by the formula:
n
f= t frequency can also be expressed as:
1
f= T
Frequency is measured in hertz (Hz).

Let us now do a quick exercise

1. The diagram shows a simple pendulum oscillating
between point A and C. It takes 1.8s for the
pendulum bob to move from point A to C and back to
the mid-point B.

a. What do you understand by the term length of a

pendulum? X2
b. Calculate the period of a pendulum? X2
c. What is the frequency of a pendulum? X2
The correct answers are:
a. Length of the pendulum is the distance from the
ceiling to the center of the bob.
t
b. T= n
1.8 s
T= 0.75
T = 2.4s
1
c. f= T
f= 1/2.4
f= 0.42Hz
Conclusion (30 seconds)
I hope you got the answers correctly.
Well learner, we have come to the end of this lesson.
In this lesson, we looked at the simple pendulum and how
to solve problems on the simple pendulum. The simple
pendulum consists of a bob or a weight hanging at the end
of a string or wire.

Until next time, this has been your teacher, Chilufya

Humphrey
