Revision Notes (Unit 14)

The document covers concepts related to functions and graphs, including function machines, mapping diagrams, and linear graphs. It explains the significance of coordinates, equations in the form of y=mx+c, and how to interpret gradients and y-intercepts. Additionally, it provides examples of real-life applications of these equations, such as cost calculations based on time and standing charges.

Unit 14

Functions and Graphs

Function machine

Input- numbers that entered into function machine

Output- numbers that come out from function machine

Mapping diagram

-shows what outputs go with particular inputs

Linear graphs

Coordinates-The ordered pairs that describe a mapping on the axes

Numbers in input- x-coordinates

Numbers in output- y-coordinates

The coordinates are (1,13), (2,28), (3,43), (4,58),…

Equations in the form of y=mx+c

If y= ‘a number’, it’s horizontal line. (Example, y=4)

If x= ‘a number’, it’s vertical line. (Example, x=2)

Equation for diagonal line

y=mx+c

m=gradient of the line (how steep the line is)

c= y-intercept of the line (where the line crosses y-axis)

*If the value of m is the same, the lines will be parallel*.

y=2x+3

y=2x+1

y=2x-3

*If the value of c is the same, the lines will cross at the same point*.

y=2x+2

y=x+2

y=3x+2
*m=positive, positive gradient*

y=x

y=2x

y=3x

y=4x

*m=negative, negative gradient*

y=-x

y=-2x

y=-3x

y=-4x

Real-life graphs

y=mx+c

The letter on the y-axis can replace y

The letter on the x-axis can replace x

y-intercept (c) = $25 =standing charge

gradient=cost per hour=$20

c=20h+2
