Cyber threats are escalating globally, we have now entered an era of

"systemic cyber insecurity"

[Dubai, 1/7/2024] — Hackmanac has released its fourth annual Global Cyber Attacks Report, a
comprehensive analysis of the thousands of cyber attacks that occurred throughout 2023.
To provide insight into the real situation on the ground and highlight key trends, the report analyses at
a statistical level the more than 7,000 known attacks that occurred globally in 2023 and compares them
to those of the previous five years.
In its 2024 Report, Hackmanac also introduces its Estimated Severity Index (ESIX®), a proprietary
algorithm developed to consistently assess the severity of each attack. For the first time, this unique
metric makes it possible to systematically assess the impact of cyber-attacks and rank each cyber-
threat according to its impact on different types of victims.
In 2023, Hackmanac recorded and analysed an average of 589 attacks per month, an alarming 184%
increase on the previous year. The data shows that “manufacturing” has become the most targeted
industry globally, suffering 16% of all attacks, followed by “professional, scientific and technical”
sectors (11%) and “ICT” (10%).
The severity of these attacks has also escalated, with 91% of them rated Critical and High by their ESIX®
(up from 80% in 2022).
Geographically, the report shows that 77% of all recorded cyber-attacks targeted the Americas
(particularly the US and Canada) and Europe.
Among the most commonly used cyber-attack techniques, malware remains the leader, used in 70%
of recorded attacks, followed by vulnerabilities (11%), with a significant increase in the use of 0-day
exploits compared to 2022.
"Successful cyber-attacks are increasing at an unprecedented rate," said Sofia Scozzari, CEO of
Hackmanac. "The number of incidents has increased by over 350% in just six years, but even more
alarming is the increase in their average severity, which is an additional multiplier of the damage
suffered by companies across all industries and governments on all continents."
“We have entered an era of systemic cyber insecurity, and simply increasing cybersecurity spending is
no longer enough. Decision-makers should be designing their strategies and allocating their budgets
based on their organisation's actual threat model, with a deep and up-to-date understanding of the
specific impacts affecting their industry, to implement more effective countermeasures.
Unfortunately, our data shows that this is not yet happening”.
