and it may vary with the course student applying for.

1. Tell me something about yourself? –


Suggested Answer: Answer should be crisp and clear “ My name is Smith, I am currently working
/studying in X company/university from past X years (only applicable in case of working) and I
am planning to study Bachelors/Master’s/PHd X course at Y university.

2. Which University have you applied to? Long


Suggested Answer: I have applied to 5 universities and got an admit from X university
3. Why the specified University?
Suggested Answer: Student should be able tell positive points about the university and should
mention why he is interested in the course
4. How many Universities have you applied?(both admits and rejects)
5. Which University accepted you?
6. Where have you done your Under Graduation?
7. What does your father do?
8. What is your father’s income?
9. Do you have any brothers/sisters?
10. What will you do after completing MS? /plans after Graduation? (Important)
Suggested Answer: Student should be able to clearly explain that he wants to come back to India
for professional reasons and not personal reasons like family is here and we have a lot of
property. (For eg. I would like to come back to India and would like to start up my own business
or would like to work with X companies in India as it offers a lot of potential for growth.
Moreover, I would be closer to my family in India or I will join my family business.
11. Why study in USA?
Suggested Answer: Flexible program—Practical/Research Based Education—International
Exposure, Diverty
12. Did you get any scholarship?

Suggested Answer: Student should know about the universities curriculum and what interests
him in this university and why does he want to study in the specified university

Suggested Answer: It is suggested that student should mention some professor’s name so that it
adds a positive impact on his application and student has done his homework before.
18. Where did you brother/parents complete their studies?
19. Why are you leaving your current job?(if you are working)
20. Where do your parents live?
21. Do you know anyone (in USA) in your University?
22. What will you do if your visa is rejected?
Suggested Answer: “It is recommended that student mentions that “I will apply again as I have
prepared hard for my application.”
23. Will you come home during summer?
24. Why do you think the University is giving you a scholarship?
25. Why do you wish to study in the USA and not in India?
Suggested Answer: Flexible program—Practical/Research Based Education—International
Exposure and DO NOT mention any derogatory statement s like “India doesn’t offer such
education or education system is poor.”

If you have changed your field of specialization (for e.g. if you are BE Mechanical and opting for
MS in Computer Science) then what brought about the change?
26. What steps have you taken to ensure that you will be able to perform well in the new field you
wish to change to?

28. How will you finance your education for 2 years or 4years?(generally you have to prove that
you have sufficient funds for the first year education but I suggest you be prepared with the
answer)
Suggested Answer: Student should mention about the funds available with him and it is
suggested that he mentions about the loans at the end of the statement. For eg. My parents/I
will be sponsoring the education with their savings worth 30000 USD, additionally we have
assets in form of properties/gold/deposits worth 90000USD and we will also take up a loan
worth 40000 USD.
29. Do you have a brother/sister or any other relative already at this University?

Suggested Answer: I have checked a couple of websites like www.immihelp.com and also from a
couple of my friends who have already got their visa approved or studying abroad.
38. What are your grades like?
39. Why do you plan to do MS?
40. Why are your GRE/TOEFL scores low?
41. Why are you changing your stream? (if applicable) .
42. What are your career goals?
43. What do you know about US education?
It is more flexible, it offers practical knowledge and education system is well renowned and
accepted globally.
44. Why are you applying for Fall only?
45. What is your university yearly expense?
Suggested Answer: Student should mention the exact cost mentioned on the I-20.
46. Say about the positive points of USA?
47. How much time you are going to stay in USA?
Suggested Answer: It should be the duration of the program.
48. What are your expectations after returning back to your native country?
49. Have you ever gone to USA before?
Tips: The student should keep the following things in mind while answering the questions

 Intent of studying in USA as a student: Student should always say that he is planning to
study there and do not talk about any internships/job opportunities.
 Ties to the home country – Student should always mention that he will come back to his
home country for professional reasons like (business/jobs) and not personal ties like
(have family here, have to support my family or have assets here) and do not plan to
stay in USA for employment or any internship.
 Have sufficient funds to cover expenses to for 1/2/4 years— Student should mention
that he has sufficient funds to cover expenses for the program and should be able to
mention the funds. The higher the funds, the better it is.
 Student should sound confident throughout the interview
 Student should provide proactive information to avoid being asked more questions
 Student should give clear/crisp and to the point answers.
 Do not ask more than 15 questions from the student as an ideal interview lasts only
from 10 seconds to 3 minutes unless there is a major goof up.
