III. TEACHING ACTIVITIES

Teacher' Activity Student's Activity

A. Preparatory Activities

1. Greetings (Interpersonal Intelligence)

Good afternoon, class! Good afternoon ma'am!

How are you today? We’re good, Ma’am.

I'm glad to hear that.

2. Prayer (Existential Intelligence)

Before we start, everybody please stand for a

prayer.

Carene can you lead the prayer?

A selected learner will lead the prayer.

3. Checking of Attendance (Verbal Intelligence)

Class monitor, do we have absentees today?

None Ma’am
Very Good, no one is absent today! I hope
you're always present in this class.
4. Review of Classroom rules.

Now before we begin, let's have our classroom

rules.
(Students will read the classroom rules)
Everyone please read.

5. Review of the Previous Lesson

Let us have a short review of our lesson

yesterday.

What we discussed yesterday? What it is all Our previous lesson is about adding and

6. Presentation of Objectives (Verbal

Intelligence)

So now, let us identify first the intended

learning outcomes that you must attain at the
end of our discussion.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES.
Everybody please read.
a. change rational algebraic expressions into
similar rational algebraic equations;

b. write rational algebraic expressions to

the LCD; and

c. solve word problems by adding and

subtracting dissimilar rational algebraic
expressions.

Thank you, class!

7. Drill (3 minutes) – “Number Flash”

Before we proceed to our lesson, I have a

flashcards activity to test your understanding on
how to add and subtract similar rational
algebraic expression. (Students will answer)
Anyone, what is 3
1.
2 1 x+3
1. +
x+3 x+3 x
2.
3x 2x x−1
2. –

4. –
2 x +3 2 x +3

Great job everyone. It seems that you really

understand our previous lesson.

B. Lesson Proper
1. ACTIVITY - "Fraction Relay "

Before we proceed to our lesson today, we will

have an activity first. This activity is called
“Fraction relay” Instructions:
Everyone read the instructions. You will be divided into two (2) groups. At
the starting signal, one member from each
group runs to the board to solve the first
equation problem. If they don’t know the
answer, they return to their team and the
next player goes. After solving it correctly,
they run back and tag their teammate.
Continues until the equation are correctly
solved. The winning team is the first to
complete all four equation problems
accurately.

Yes, Ma'am
Are the instructions clear, class?
(student will start counting 1 to 2)

Great! Let’s start counting from this side.

(The teacher will assign students in their proper

teams)

Okay class, let’s start the game.

Group 1: Group 2:
1 2 7 5 2 19
1. 2 + 3 = 6 1. 6 + 9 = 18

3 1 17 3 1 13
2. + = 2. + =
5 4 20 8 6 24
3 1 7 7 2 3
3. 4 - 6 = 12 3. 10 − 5 = 10

5 1 7 5 1 7
4. 8 - 3 = 24 4. 6 − 4 = 12

That was awesome!

2. ANALYSIS
Based on the activity what do you think will be
our lesson for today?
Our lesson for today is about adding and
Yes,_____? subtracting dissimilar rational algebraic
expression, Ma'am.

Very Good!
In adding and subtracting dissimilar rational
Everyone, please read the description. algebraic expressions, change the rational
algebraic expressions into similar rational
algebraic expressions using the least
common denominator or LCD and proceed
as in adding similar fractions.

Thank you, class.

[Discussion on Steps on adding and subtracting

dissimilar rational algebraic expressions]

Let us look at the steps to be followed for

adding and subtracting dissimilar rational
algebraic expressions.

Steps in adding and subtracting dissimilar

rational algebraic expressions:
Everyone please read the steps:
Step 1: Find the LCD

Step 2: Rename the expression as similar

rational expressions using LCD.

Step 3: Add or Subtract the numerator and

copy the denominator.

Step 4: Simplify.

Thank you, class.

(Student will listen attentively)

Dissimilar Rational Algebraic Expressions
▪ Rational algebraic expressions with different
denominators.
5x 2
For example: 18 a and 27 b
As you can see they have different
denominators. That’s why this is called
dissimilar rational algebraic expression.

Now, I have here some examples on how to add

and subtract dissimilar rational algebraic
expression.
Example 1:
x x
4a + 5a
Step 1: Find the LCD:
The least common multiple of 4 and 5 is 20.
Now copy the a so that the LCD is 20a.

(Student will listen attentively)

Step 2: Rename as similar rational expressions
x x x(5) x(4) 5x 4x
4a + 5a =
20 a + 20 a = +
20 a 20 a
Step 3: Add or subtract the numerator and
copy the denominator
5x 4x 5x+4 x 9x
20 a + 20 a = 20 a = 20 a

Step 4: Simplify
9x
= 20 a
Let's practice with another example.

Example 2:
5a 3a
+
14 m 21 m
Step 1: Find the LCD:
The factor of 14m is 7∙2∙m
The factor of 21m is 7∙3∙m
Copy the common factor which is 7, then copy
the 2∙3∙m
7∙2∙3∙m = 42m
Step 2: Rename as similar rational expressions
5a 5 a(3) 3 a(2)
+¿ 3 a = +
14 m 21m 42 m 42m
15 a 6a
= 42 m + 42 m
Step 3: Add or subtract the numerator and
copy the denominator
15 a 6a 15 a+6 a 21a
42 m + 42 m = 42 m = 42 m
Step 4: Simplify
21a a
42 m = 2m
In example number 3, who can answer on the (Someone will raise his/her hand and
board? answer on the board)

Anyone? Example 3:
Yes, _____? 5c 7
10 y - 15 y
Step 1: Find the LCD
Factor of 10y is 5∙2∙y

Factor of 15y is 5∙3∙y

LCD: 5∙2∙3∙y = 30y

Step 2: Rename as similar rational

expressions

7c 5 7 c (3) 5(2)
10 y
- 15 y
= 30 y
- 30 y
21 c 10
= 30 y - 30 y
Step 3: Add or subtract the numerator and
copy the denominator
21 c 10 21 c−10 11c
-
30 y 30 y = 30 y = 30 y
Step 4: Simplify
11c
¿
30 y

To add and subtract dissimilar rational

algebraic expression, we follow the four
(Teacher will check students’ work on the board basic steps, which are:
and give feedback.)
Step 1: Find the LCD.
Step 2: Rename the expression as similar
rational expressions using LCD.
3. ABSTRACTION
Step 3: Add or subtract the numerators and

simplify this rational expression?
Step 4: Simplify.
Yes, _____?

Well said!

the word problem assigned to you. Use the
steps you have learned about adding and
4. APPLICATION - (5 minutes ) subtracting dissimilar rational algebraic
expressions.
This time let’s see how far you have learned
from our discussion. Now, I want you to work in (The students will start groupings)
groups of 3. I will give you a set of word

solve them. Each group will present their
answers after the activity.
Group Activity Problems: (Students will answer their activity).

(Teacher will check students’ work on the board
and give feedback.)
Before we move on, does anyone have any
questions or clarifications about the answers?
If no, please return the papers to the owner.
(Teacher will allow students to check their own
