Many pre-teens and teenagers enjoy spending their free time doing
things like shopping, going to parties, being with friends, gaming and using
social media, texting, watching movies, reading and going to the beach or
park. Pre-teens and teenagers might also spend their free time doing
structured extracurricular activities like arts and sports, community
activities or volunteering, or casual work.
Spending some free time together is a great way to stay connected with
your child. Doing something one-on-one with parents can be a treat for your
child. You could go to a movie or concert, cook a meal together, go for a walk,
look through family photos, or work together on a project like redecorating
your child’s room. It just depends on what interests you and your child have
in common.
These activities might not happen spontaneously. You might need to
discuss ideas with your child and plan to spend some time together. If
spending free time with you is a new thing, your child might need some
encouragement before they're keen. If this is an issue, you could plan short
activities you know your child is likely to enjoy to start with. Besides, you
could ask your child whether they’d like to invite a friend along. If you spend
time together often enough, your child will probably start to feel more
enthusiastic, so keep trying. You might need to try a range of activities before
you find one you both like.

Teenage years are a time when your young people grow and develop
really quickly, and the requirements for some vitamins and minerals, like
calcium and iron, is fairly high. The age at which your child will have a
growth spurt will vary, but in girls the growth spurt normally peaks at 12.5
years of age, and in boys at age 14 years of age.
Many lifestyle changes take place during adolescence. When children
start secondary school, they often have more independence and greater
control over the choices they make. They can often make decisions about
what and when they want to eat, and how they spend their free time. Media
can often be a challenge promoting the "thin" body ideal, as well as
challenging other aspects of your family values and beliefs. This may result in
difficulty for them knowing what a healthy weight and lifestyle is, and this
has the potential to lead to unhealthy eating habits and beliefs.
It is important to listen to what your young people are saying, and
explore with them what their views and opinions are. Accepting and
understanding your child’s point of view, even if you don’t agree, is an
essential part of parenting adolescents to keep lines of communication
open. If you build good routines around healthy eating and exercise, they will
have an understanding that people come in all different shapes and sizes,
and by eating a healthy, varied diet and taking part in regular physical
activity, their weight should stay healthy.

At the World Cities Summit, Resilient Cities Network today released a
white paper, titled "Urban Eats: How Cities Leverage Opportunities to Build
Resilient Food Systems through Circular Pathways". The report argues that
food waste presents an untapped business opportunity that can unlock
multiple benefits, such as economic growth and green jobs, improved food
security and a healthier planet. Globally, 150 million urban residents are
food insecure, while cities generate over 2.8 billion tons of organic waste
each year. Only 2% of this waste is captured and recycled to contribute to
reduced emissions and increased employment, while also recapturing
nutrients for growing food.
“Given that cities will consume 80% of the world's food in 2050 while
food insecurity continues to rise, it is clear that action must begin there,” said
Lauren Sorkin, Executive Director of the Resilient Cities Network. "By
advancing circular practices that both reduce waste and create value from
waste, we can unlock multiple resilience benefits, such as reducing carbon
footprint of food, improving food distribution, breaking the dependence on
non-renewable inputs in food production, generating jobs and boosting food
supply efficiency.”
A circular food economy, which builds resilience, would help deliver an
adequate food supply to meet global nutritional needs, and support
regenerative practices based on reduced waste, recovering nutrients and
addressing pollution in the food system.

invented by Jan Koum, a Ukrainian-born entrepreneur? After he had bought
his first iPhone, he got annoyed of missing calls when he went to the gym
and WhatsApp grew out of the simple idea that it is good to let people know
if you’re available. He came up with the name WhatsApp because it sounded
like ‘What’s up?’
There was nothing in Koum’s upbringing to suggest that the young
Ukrainian would one day change the world of social media. He was brought
up in a small village near Kiev. When Koum was sixteen, he emigrated to
California with his mother and grandmother, while his father stayed behind
and never left Ukraine. It was a hard time for the family who lived in very
run-down accommodation.
Koum studied Computer Science and Maths, but at school he came up
against bullying from other boys and often got into trouble. In Ukraine, Koum
had left behind his close friends and at that time, he looked down on the
casual friendships that people had at highschool in America and he
eventually dropped out of college.
Things changed when he got a job at Yahoo in the early 2000s. First he
met Brian Acton, who would go on to co-found WhatsApp. When Koum and
Acton left Yahoo in 2007, they applied for jobs at Facebook. Both were
turned down.
Following rejection from Facebook, the two friends decided to go
travelling in South America, and it was when they returned to the USA that
they co-founded WhatsApp. The app didn’t take off straight away, which was
a real let down for Koum and Acton. However, in 2014 it had more than 400
million users globally. In the end, the huge success of WhatsApp came down
to the excellent user experience. Facebook paid more than $19 billion to
acquire WhatsApp, which more than made up for their earlier rejection,
turning both Koum and Acton into billionaires.

walkers.
In the USA there is a book called One-Minute Bedtime Stories for
children. These are shorter versions of traditional stories, especially written

How much fruit do you eat every day? And how many vegetables? Food
experts today think that we don't have enough of these foods in our diet and
they say that we eat too much fat and sugar. This is why the World Health
Organization has started a campaign to encourage US to eat more fruit and
vegetables. The campaign in the UK is called Five a Day.
Why eat fruit and vegetables?
Fruit and vegetables are full of important vitamins and minerals which our
bodies need to be healthy. Scientific studies have shown that eating a lot of
them can prevent some illnesses like diabetes and obesity. Also, fruit and
vegetables don't contain much fat and they don't have many calories, so they
help to keep us slim.
What counts?
Nearly all fruit and vegetables count towards your five a day, except potatoes.
The food can be fresh, frozen, or in a can, like peaches or peas. It can be raw,
cooked, or even dried, like raisins or banana chips. A glass of 100% fruit juice
with no added sugar also counts as one portion.
How much is a portion?
A portion of fresh fruit or vegetables depends on the size of the food. In the
case of small-sized fruit like plums or mandarin oranges, one portion is two
pieces of fruit. A piece of medium-sized fruit like an apple, an orange, or a
pear also counts as one portion. With larger fruit like melon and pineapple,
one portion is a 5 cm slice. We use the same method for calculating portions
with vegetables. In the case of salad vegetables, a medium-sized tomato or a
5cm piece of cucumber count as one portion each. For smaller, cooked
vegetables like beans and carrots, one portion is three large spoonfuls of
vegetables.

Read the following passage and Choose the correct answer to each of the
following questions from 31 to 36.
Cruises are becoming more and more popular, with around 20 million
passengers per year now enjoying holidays on luxury ships. Many people see
a cruise as the perfect way to sit back, do nothing, and enjoy time off work.
Everything you could possibly need is within easy reach. On board, there are
shops, theatres, cinemas, swimming pools and leisure centres. There are
more facilities, in fact, than most towns offer their residents. Therefore, it’s
easy to see why they are so popular. But what is the effect of this trend?
Cruise ships are often huge, with the biggest ones carrying up to 6,000
passengers. Moving such large vehicles requires enormous engines, which
burn as much as 300,000 litres of fuel a day. One scientist has calculated that
cruise ships create as much pollution as 5 million cars going over the same
distance. Because they are out at sea, they also burn fuel that isn’t allowed on
land. Unfortunately, no government has control over the amount of air
pollution out at sea. Cruises also produce huge amounts of rubbish, and
cruise ships aren’t usually good at recycling. Waste water from showers and
toilets is usually poured directly into the sea - as much per day as from a
small town. Waste food from restaurants isn't put into the sea, but still
causes problems when they are brought back to land.
Cruise ships also cause difficulties in the cities where they stop. Popular
destinations can get five or six ships per day, with thousands of tourists at a
time. It appears to be a benefit for restaurants; however, restaurant owners
complain that the visitors look around for a few hours and then return to
their ship to eat. What’s more, the crowds can put off other tourists, who
complain that the streets are too busy. Some towns have banned cruise
ships or put a limit on the number that can stop at the same time. People
who care about the environment worry that as the cruise industry continues
to grow, the issues for our planet will, too.

Phao Dat, clay firecracker hurling, is popular in northern Vietnam. It
involves throwing clay firecrackers on the ground to create noise. A clay
firecracker festival is held in many northern localities every year between
the Lunar New Year and April when the locals are not busy with the farm
work. The event in Hai Duong province is the most famous. It's hard to say
when clay firecracker hurling first appeared in Vietnam, but legend has it
that the game began during the construction of the Red River dikes.
The game invites good harvests and to ward off natural disasters. It is
believed that the louder the noise of firecrackers is the more bountiful the
crops will be in the coming year. Pham Van Phuc of Quyet Thang commune in
Ninh Giang district said, "Every year, a clay firecracker festival is held
between January and the end of March involving all communes and districts.
"There is a competition almost every day. The competition brings us joy,
happiness, good luck, and the hope of a new favorable crop,” Thang added.
During the summer or when they had free time after school, rural
children used to knead clay into firecrackers for playful fights. Before
throwing the firecrackers, the children would sing a folk song that goes “The
big bang of firecrackers stirs the entire village...”. The children’s folk game
eventually became a game for adults and was popular at village festivals.
According to people in Minh Due commune, clay firecrackers began in the
time of the Trung sisters from 12 to 43 AD when female General Le Chan
asked her soldiers to make clay firecrackers to create loud explosions to
threaten foreign invaders. It became a game to play during festivals.

Memory is a critical part of any kind of studying, and effective memorization
is strongly correlated with success in foreign language classes. Although
people often think of memory as a fixed quality, it’s actually a skill that you
can improve through deliberate practice.
There's a considerable amount of research on how memory works, as well
as a wide range of strategies for improving memory. For example, scientific
experiments show that our short-term memory can only hold about 7 pieces
of new information at once. Therefore, if you’re working on a long list of new
vocabulary words, start by breaking it up into smaller chunks, and study one
shorter section at a time. Additionally, research also suggests that actively
trying to recall information is more effective than simply reviewing
information; essentially, self-testing will help you more than re-reading your
notes will.
The best way to start working on your memory is to build on the techniques
that you already know work for you. For example, if associating a word with
a picture is effective for you, then you should add images into your
vocabulary practice. However, if you’re not sure where to start, here's a
'‘beginner’’ formula for memorizing a new word: use the word at least five
times the first day that you learn it, then multiple times over the week, at
least once every day. In addition to figuring out which memorization
techniques work best for you, it’s also important to actively protect your
memory. For example, experiencing a strong emotion has been shown to
sharply decrease the ability to memorize unrelated content, so if you’ve just
watched a horror movie, it’s probably not a great time for vocabulary review!

In the world of social media, TikTok is relatively new. But since its creation in
2016, it’s quickly climbed the charts when it comes to popularity. Data shows
TikTok has about 1.2 billion active users every month, which is more than X
and Instagram. The people who use it tend to spend more than an hour a day
on it.
“The way TikTok is set up to have really brief, really intense, and easily
available engagement in videos adds to that dopamine release and that
inconsistent but always available input into your brain,” said Mary Gabriel, a
child and adolescent psychiatrist for University Hospitals. She said she had
noticed the impact the app had had on her patients. “You get constant
feedback in the form of likes, comments and notifications. I mean, those
frequent, but inconsistent feedback are the combination that reinforces a
behavior,” Gabriel said.
In many cases, the app as a whole adds to the peer pressure children can face
at school. Gabriel believes it’s a big reason why she is seeing more kids these
days either facing depression or anxiety-related issues. There is science
behind the impact. Gabriel points to one area of the brain that usually
doesn’t become fully developed until people reach their mid-20s. Until then,
she said their decisionmaking process may not be as logical or as rational,
leading them to be more vulnerable to be influenced by what they see on the
app.

through early adulthood, the body is in a stage of rapid growth. To support
proper growth and development, teens need a steady supply of calories and
nutrients on a daily basis.
A diet high in nutritious foods can benefit their overall health, but a diet that
lacks essential nutrients or provides inadequate calorie intake can directly
affect school performance, mood and metabolic health. Plus, less healthy
dietary patterns established during adolescence can increase the risk of
health problems later in life.
However, following a nutritious diet can be challenging for teens for many
reasons, including food preferences and availability as well as social and
parental influences. Plus, teens can be heavily influenced by mass media,
including social media, which may have negative effects on body image,
dietary intake, and more.
Considering these factors, it’s easy to understand why many teens — as well
as their parents and caregivers - are unsure what constitutes a healthy diet
and which foods they should regularly eat.

Read the following passage and Choose the correct answer to each of the
following questions from 31 to 36.
People have lived in caves since the dawn of time. But if you're picturing a
cold, damp and cramped space, you’ll need to think again. In Spain,
thousands of modern day cave-dwellers call a hole in the ground their home
and it’s a better home than you thought. There are a large number of
luxurious houses carved into the Andalucian mountains which offer more
comfort than you might imagine.
Why do they choose to live in a cave? To begin with, cave houses are
affordable, easy to heat in the winter and stay cool in the summer. Being
carved into stone, their temperature does not fluctuate much and it is about
20 degrees Celsius throughout the year. Each home is unique. If you purchase
a property which is allowed to be modified, it’s easy to carve an extra shelf in
the wall or even a whole new room.
However, you don’t need such a spacious cave to feel the charm of a cave
home. You can’t feel that you are underground or feel locked up, even in
some of the small-sized houses. Cave houses bring warmth and coziness,
which is a unique selling point for many buyers. Most cave homes face the
south to allow natural light to enter through the windows cut into the rock
face. But due to the ingenious layout of many homes and the white walls,
light is easily transmitted throughout. In areas further back, modern builders
often use a system of normal mirrors to reflect natural light inside the house.
Cave houses are also surprisingly safe. They are not prone to fires or
earthquakes and they do not tend to collapse. However, while deciding to
choose this accommodation, you have to take into consideration a few
factors. Ventilation is important for a cave home to breathe and prevent
excess moisture which can lead to asthma attacks. Electricity is generally
preferred over gas, but when gas fittings are provided, these tend to be
closer to the front of the cave for safety reasons. As cave communities tend to
be in small villages, a car is essential for getting around and nightlife is hard
to find. Such homes are for those who prefer a quiet rural lifestyle, quaint
cobbled backstreets and breathtaking views.

It is very important to have healthy teeth. Good teeth help US to chew our
food. They also help us to look nice. How does a tooth go bad? The decay
begins in a little crack in the enamel covering of the tooth. This happens
after germs and bits of food have collected there. Then the decay slowly
spreads inside the tooth. Eventually, poison goes into blood, and we may feel
quite ill.
How can we keep our teeth healthy? Firstly, we ought to visit our dentist
twice a year. He can fill the small holes in our teeth before they destroy the
teeth. He can examine our teeth to check that they are growing in the right
way. Unfortunately, many people wait until they have toothache before they
see a dentist. Secondly, we should brush our teeth with a toothbrush and
fluoride toothpaste at least twice a day - once after breakfast and once before
we go to bed. We can also use wooden toothpicks to clean between our teeth
after a meal. Thirdly, we should eat food that is good for our teeth and our
body: milk, cheese, fish, brown bread, potatoes, red rice, raw vegetables and

eat them between meals. They are harmful because they stick to our teeth

Read the following passage and Choose the correct answer to each of the
following questions from 31 to 36.
Amy Wyke is one of many new entrepreneurs making the most of the trend
in second-hand clothing. It’s not all plain sailing, though. As Amy says, "With
so many competitors, you’ve got to find your edge. Some sellers specialise
in designer labels, for example, or clothing from a particular era. Of course,
you have the problem of sourcing the right clothes for your brand. Trends
change as well, which could turn around and bite you. Selling a bit of
everything, as I do, means I’m not putting all my eggs in one basket, but it
means I have to find other ways to attract customers."
"I’ve learned important lessons in my work, especially regarding money. I
struggled working alone and earning a pittance for ages, thinking it was
more cost-effective than taking on staff. I’m so glad I’m not doing that now, as
I’m bringing in far more even while paying out for two people’s wages. It’s
the same with the website. The one I designed was decent enough, but it has
really paid off since I took the plunge and paid professionals to improve the
design. It doesn't come easily to me, as I’m not naturally a spendthrift."
I asked Amy her thoughts about the future of second-hand clothing. After all,
a growing industry in second-hand clothes could hurt the industries that
produce new clothes, so potentially, once all our second-hand ones are worn
out, we might run out of clothes. Amy is more optimistic, however. "The
second-hand clothing market has brought in a new interest in adapting and
redesigning old clothes or making them from scratch. That’s something that
really died out in the era of chain stores. So, in future, I think I’ll be stocking
more of those kinds of clothes, which is great."

Read the following passage and Choose the correct answer to each of the
following questions from 31 to 36.
If you are planning a trip to Shangri-La, it probably means you have visited
Lijiang already. You are now looking for something else to do in the area.
Thanks to the recent infrastructures like a new highway and the high-speed
railway, it’s now quite convenient to visit this little Tibetan city. Technically,
you can even do it on a day trip, but I recommend staying a few nights.
Until December 17, 2001, Shangri-La was called Zhongdian, but the name
was changed to match the mystical place James Hilton talked about in his
novel "Lost Horizon”. It was a marketing move to get more tourists. In the
novel, Shangri- La is an ancient and secret city of wise men, gathered from all
over the world, of different sexes, cultures, religions, and temperaments, who
live extremely long lives and are truly happy.
The city lies at an elevation of about 3100 meters, so it’s pretty cold in
winter. It can rain often in summer so it’s better to visit in spring or autumn.
Regardless of when you decide to go, try to avoid all the national holidays
and the month of August when students and teachers are on holiday. August
is exceptionally crowded because most Chinese are trying to escape from
the heat of the rest of the country. Remember that Shangri-La is at an
altitude of 3160 meters, so you might suffer from altitude sickness,
especially if you fly from a much lower elevation.
Right next to the city is a small airport and a newly built high-speed train
station. So you can either fly or get there by train. The other option is to get
there by bus from Lijiang. There are buses every 20 minutes or so, and
thanks to a new highway, it only takes 2.5 hours. If you opt for the bus,
remember that foreigners cannot book the tickets in advance using an app,
so you’ll have to physically go to the bus station (bring your passport). I
recommend doing so if you want to leave at a specific time because the
tickets are quickly sold out. You cannot buy the return ticket from Shangri-La
to Lijiang while you are in Lijiang. So I suggest booking the return ticket
when you arrive in Shangri-La.
