JSS 2 Computer Studies – Third Term Lesson Notes

The Internet
The Internet is a global system of interconnected computer networks that use the
standard Internet protocol suite (TCP/IP) to link several billion devices worldwide.
It is a network of networks that consists of millions of private, public, academic,
business, and government networks of local to global scope, linked by a broad array
of electronic, wireless, and optical networking technologies. It enables users to
access and share information across the globe, allowing for communication through
emails, instant messaging, and video calls; access to vast information resources;
online shopping and banking; and participation in social media platforms. The
Internet operates through a decentralized structure and supports various services
like web browsing, file sharing, and streaming.

Examples of Internet Use:

- Sending emails

- Accessing information via search engines

- Online shopping and banking

- Participating in social media platforms

Internet Browser
An Internet browser, or web browser, is a software application used to access and
view websites on the World Wide Web. Web browsers interpret and display web
pages, allowing users to navigate from one page to another via hyperlinks. They
provide functionalities such as bookmarking favorite sites, managing browsing
history, and installing extensions to enhance user experience.

Common Browsers:

- Google Chrome

- Mozilla Firefox

- Microsoft Edge
- Safari

Functions:

- Navigating web pages

- Downloading files

- Streaming videos and audio

- Managing bookmarks and browsing history

Benefits of Using the Internet

The Internet offers numerous advantages that have transformed how we
communicate, learn, and conduct business.

Advantages:

- Communication: Instant messaging, emails, and video calls facilitate real-time

communication.

- Information Access: Research, news, and educational resources are readily

available.

- E-commerce: Online shopping and banking provide convenience and accessibility.

- Entertainment: Streaming music, movies, and games offer diverse entertainment

options.

- E-learning: Access to online courses and educational materials supports

continuous learning.

Abuse of the Internet

Internet abuse refers to improper or unethical use of the Internet leading to
negative consequences. While the Internet provides numerous benefits, it can also
be misused in ways that harm individuals and society. Understanding these abuses
is crucial for promoting responsible Internet use.

Examples:

- Cybercrime: Illegal activities like hacking and identity theft

- Cyberbullying: Harassing individuals online

- Spam: Unsolicited and irrelevant messages

- Phishing: Fraudulent attempts to obtain sensitive information

- Malware Distribution: Spreading harmful software

Computer Network
A computer network is a group of interconnected computers that share resources
and information. Computer networks enable multiple computers to communicate
and share resources such as files, printers, and internet connections. Networks can
be as small as two computers connected in a home or as large as the Internet itself.

Types:

- LAN (Local Area Network): Covers a small area like a home or office

- WAN (Wide Area Network): Covers large geographical areas, like the Internet

- MAN (Metropolitan Area Network): Covers a city or town

Benefits:

- Resource sharing (e.g., printers, files)

- Efficient communication

- Centralized data management

Data Communication
Data communication is the exchange of data between devices through a
transmission medium such as cables or wireless signals. It involves the transfer of
digital or analog data between two or more devices and is essential for the
functioning of computer networks and the Internet. Data communication enables
activities like sending emails, streaming videos, and accessing websites.

Components:

- Sender: Originates the message

- Receiver: Receives the message

- Medium: The channel through which data is transmitted (e.g., cables, wireless)

- Protocol: Rules governing data transmission

Examples:

- Sending an email

- Streaming a video

- Downloading a file

Computer Ethics
Computer ethics are moral principles that govern the use of computers and
information systems. They guide users in the responsible and fair use of technology
and address issues like privacy, intellectual property, and the impact of computing
on society. Adhering to ethical standards ensures that technology benefits all users.

Importance:

- Promotes responsible use of technology

- Protects users' rights and privacy

- Prevents misuse and abuse of information

Ten Commandments of Computer Ethics:

1. Thou shalt not use a computer to harm other people

2. Thou shalt not interfere with other people's computer work

3. Thou shalt not snoop around in other people's computer files

4. Thou shalt not use a computer to steal

5. Thou shalt not use a computer to bear false witness

6. Thou shalt not copy or use proprietary software for which you have not paid
7. Thou shalt not use other people's computer resources without authorization

8. Thou shalt not appropriate other people's intellectual output

9. Thou shalt think about the social consequences of the program you are writing

10. Thou shalt always use a computer in ways that ensure consideration and respect
for your fellow humans
