Avocado Cold Storage Plan

The document outlines the design specifications for an avocado cold storage facility according to PAES 417:2002, targeting a storage condition of 13°C and 85-90% relative humidity. It details the required dimensions, structural guidelines, layout plan, and workload considerations for a facility capable of storing 10 metric tons of avocados. The total building footprint is estimated to be approximately 300-350 m², with designated areas for receiving, sorting, pre-cooling, and cold storage.

Avocado Cold Storage – Design According to PAES 417:2002

Agricultural Structures – Fruit and Vegetable Storage

Target Storage Conditions (Annex C):
 Temperature: 13°C
 Relative Humidity (RH): 85–90%
1. Dimensions and Space Requirements
Let’s assume a storage for 10 metric tons (10,000 kg) of avocado using
palletized refrigerated storage.
Calculation Basis:
 Box size: 0.6 m x 0.4 m x 0.3 m (0.072 m³)
 Avocado density in crate: approx. 140 kg/m³
 Stacking height: 8 boxes high
 Number of boxes needed:
10,000kg/(0.072m3×140kg/m3)≈992boxes
 Area per pallet load (stack of boxes): ~1.2 m² including aisles and
spacing

Estimated Floor Area:

 Storage area only:
(992boxes÷8boxes/stack)≈124stacks
 Add ~40% for aisles, forklift, access:
≈ 210 m²
Additional Areas:
 Receiving/sorting: 50–60 m²
 Pre-cooling: 25–30 m²
 Office/toilet/washing: 30–40 m²
Total Building Footprint:
Approximately 300–350 m²

2. Structural Guidelines (Section 7)

Component Requirement
Walls Concrete, smooth finish, painted white latex, insulated (R-20)
Ceiling Min. 6m height (for mechanical handling), insulated (R-30)
Floor Reinforced concrete, 2–4% slope to drain, leveled with trucks,
Component Requirement
insulated (R-10)
Doors Sliding, 2.5m width, air curtain or flap, small access with glass
Ceiling (R-30), Wall (R-20), Floor (R-10)
Insulation
G.I. sheet with corrosion coating,
Roof
vents with screens

3. Layout Plan Overview

Here's a breakdown of your SketchUp layout zones:
Main Zones:
1. Receiving & Sorting Area (60 m²)
o Entry point
o Sorting tables
2. Pre-cooling Room (30 m²)
o Blast cooler
o Temperature monitors
3. Cold Storage Area (210 m²)
o Pallet racks with aisle spacing
o Air plenum below stack (80 mm)
o Spacing:
 80 mm from walls
 300 mm ceiling clearance
 10 mm vertical air gap between boxes
4. Utility Room (25 m²)
o Compressor, control panels, water storage
5. Admin, Toilet & Wash Area (25 m²)
o Staff hygiene facility
Access Roads & Drainage:
 Concrete-paved surroundings
 Drainage sloped externally
 Parking bay for loading trucks

4. Workload Consideration
 Labor: 4–6 workers per shift (sorting, loading, checking)
 Forklift space: ~3 m wide aisles
 Loading ramp aligned with floor level
Summary for SketchUp Modeling
 Total dimensions: ~20 m x 17 m building
 Clear divisions of zones by function
 Incorporate structural details like:
o Coved corners (50–60 mm radius)
o Ventilation (roof or fan-exhausted)
o
o Air-tight refrigerated zones
