REASONING AND ASSERTION
Q.1. Assertion: If ∆ABC and ∆PQR are congruent triangles, then they are also similar triangles.
Reason: All congruent triangles are similar but the similar triangles need not be
congruent.

Q.2. Assertion: In the given figure, ∆АВС ~ ΔΑΕΙ. If BC = 8 cm, AB = 6.5 cm,
AD = 2.8 cm and DE = 4 cm, then AC = 5.6 cm.
Reason: If in two triangles, angles of one triangle are proportional to the angles of
the other triangle, then their corresponding sides are equal, and hence, the two
triangles are similar.
Q.3. Assertion: In the ∆ABC, AB = 24 cm, BC = 10 cm and AC = 26 cm, then ∆ABC is a
right angle triangle.
Reason: If in two triangles, their corresponding angles are equal, then the triangles are
similar.

Q.4. Assertion: The Basic Proportionality Theorem only applies to right–angled triangles.
Reason: The Basic Proportionality Theorem can be used to prove the similarity of any two
triangles with proportional sides.

Q.5. Assertion: In ∆ABC, if DE || BC and AD = 4x – 3, AE = 8x – 7, BD = 3x – 1 and CE = 5x – 3,

then x = 5 units.
Reason: If a line is drawn parallel to one side of a triangle to intersect the other two sides at
distinct points, the other two sides are divided in the same ratio.

Q.6. Assertion: In ∆ABC if D and E are midpoints of sides AB and AC, then DE || BC.
Reason: If one angle of a triangle is equal to one angle of the other triangle and the sides
including these angles are proportional, then the two triangles are similar.

𝐷𝐸 𝐸𝐹
Q.7. ∆DEF and ∆XYZ are two triangles right angled at point E and Y, Also, = .
𝑋𝑌 𝑌𝑍
Assertion: ∆DEF is similar to ∆XYZ.

Reason: All right angled triangles are similar to each other.

𝐴𝐵 𝐴𝐶
Q.8. Assertion: In a ∆ABC a line DE || BC, intersects AB at D and AC at E, then =
𝐴𝐷 𝐴𝐸
Reason: If a line is drawn parallel to one side of a triangle intersecting the other two sides, then
the other two sides are divided in the same ratio.
Q.9. Assertion: A vertical stick which is 15 cm long casts a 12 cm long shadow on the ground. At the
same time, a vertical tower casts a 50 m long shadow on the ground, then the height of the tower
is 50 m.
Reason: The ratio of the perimeters of two similar triangles is the same as the ratio of their
corresponding sides.

Q.10. Assertion: D and E are points on the side AB and AC respectively of ∆ABC such AD = 4 cm,
DB = 6 cm, AE = 9 cm and EC = 15 cm, then DE is parallel to BC.
Reason: If a line divides any two sides of a triangle in the same ratio then it is parallel to the
third side.

tallest tower in the world, standing at approximately 828 m. It
