Poems are used for many things and some of these poems are presidential. Poems are also read by
talented people called poets that create these poems that give off extended metaphors to what they try
to tell the reader. These poems can differ from each other in numerous ways but still be similar
conveying the same message.
These poems share many similarities because of who they were for and the message they try to
convey. A similarity that all three have in common is that they all were recited at the presidential
inauguration by the poets. All three of these poems were messages that were given by the poets as the
presidents requested for it to be read to them. The messages these poems convey are also similar and
something that all three poems are trying to speak on behave is their own country. All three poems talk
about America in some way while using figurative language like personification just like in “The Gift
Outright” where Robert Frost says,” She was our land more than a hundred years.” Which talks about
his country America. On the contrary, just because all three of the poems talk about America, it does not
mean that they do not describe America in the same way.
With points in mind, the same way the three poems can compare, they can also differ from each other.
The way poems depict America does not compare with all three of the poems. The poets depict America
in diverse ways while using different and comparing it to many things. A poet may address unfair rules
or flaws. But on the other hand, we could find respect for what America is, it depends on their views and
opinions of it. The poems all depend on a poet’s viewpoint and what it was like for them when living in
America. As Maya Angelou might have thought it was unfair how the rules of America were on fair by
separating people based on race, Robert Frost drafted his poem about freedom from The British. It all
depends on what the poet went through in their time spending their lives in America. Adding on to that,
these poets did not really have the same experiences either sconce they were no written by the same
person or time.
"On the Pulse of Morning" is a poem by Maya Angelou that was recited at the inauguration of
President Bill Clinton in 1993. It is a celebration of diversity and hope, urging people to come together
and embrace their differences. "The Gift Outright" is a poem by Robert Frost that was recited at the
inauguration of President John F. Kennedy in 1961. It is a patriotic poem that reflects on the history of
the United States and its role in the world. "The Hill We Climb" is a poem by Amanda Gorman that was
recited at the inauguration of President Joe Biden in 2021. It is a powerful call to action, urging people to
come together and work towards a better future for all. While all three poems were recited at
presidential inaugurations and have themes of hope and unity, they differ in their tone and style, with
Angelou's poem being more optimistic and celebratory, Frost's poem being more reflective and
introspective, and Gorman's poem being more forceful and urgent.
In conclusion, Maya Angelou's "On the Pulse of Morning," Robert Frost's "The Gift Outright," and
Amanda Gorman's "The Hill We Climb" are all powerful and influential poems that celebrate American
identity and unity. These similarities yet differences can convey multiple meanings in their own
individual way. They still stay presidential and compelling.
