For his crimes against the Fire Nation, Prince Iroh was sentenced to death. Of course, Zuko
couldn't let that stand, and so his faceoff against the Fire Lord happened sooner than expected.
Zuko escaped with a charge of high treason to his name and a reward on his head. Like mother
like son, Zuko decided to disappear. With a new face, a new name, and an old dream, Zuko
knocked on Master Piandao's door.
Little did he know that a certain Water Tribe warrior, weighed down with a promise to his father
and a slowly-deteriorating self-esteem, was not too far behind.
In hindsight, considering the look of sheer horror on Zuko's face when he saw Sokka standing
next to Piandao, "childhood friends" was not the story they should have gone with.

Staring into the darkness, Aang strained to hear Katara and Zuko’s muffled conversation, but the
wind only carried the tones of their faint voices. Sokka wasn’t helping by stirring the fire and
commenting on how beautiful the moon was. Aang broke his attention from the woods to lean
towards Sokka, his voice barely above a whisper, “I’m trying to hear what they’re saying!”
“I know!” He shot back. “She’ll tell us everything when they’re done. Now laugh like I just said
something funny.”
“Why?”
“Because we—”
Toph burst out laughing, “HA HA! That’s so funny, Sokka!” She laughed some more, then went
back to the straight expression she wore before her sudden outburst. “How’s that?” she
whispered.
Aang groaned. Once again, he didn’t catch onto what was happening. Before Toph came along
he would have said maybe it had to do with Sokka being so much older than him, but Toph
was his age and she picked up on everything Sokka did.
The older boy looked over at him and explained, “We don’t want to seem like we care what
they’re talking about. Katara will tell us everything anyways, but if we appear like we don’t care,
Zuko may be more comfortable telling her—and through her, us—more.”

They have been bickering about lunch for a while now and things were starting to get heated.
"But if we make all the rice now we will have nothing for dinner." Katara argued.
"Then make some bread."
"Ugh.... We don't have enough flour to make bread for everyone!" Katara turned to glare at
Zuko.
"Why are you getting angry at me? It's not like I am snorting all the flour!"
Everyone stopped their respective works to stare at them. Hakoda leaned towards his son to ask
"What is the....nature of your sister's....relationship with the fire prince?"
Sokka looked at his father wordlessly, he was having a hard time putting their 'relationship' in
words.
"I dunno....they are....complicated and sometimes super weird."
"Should we stop them?" Suki asked, looking at Katara who was now pointing an accusing finger
at Zuko.
"It's better not to get between them if you don't want to be impaled by ice and fire daggers."
Sokka cordially informed.

While suspended in the avatar state, Aang harnesses its spiritual power to visit the great-
grandson of his past life, a Fire Prince named Zuko. When he emerges from the iceberg to find
that same prince, it's a simple decision to help him out.
Meanwhile, Zuko has to wrestle with Kuzon, his goofy childhood friend, and the Avatar, the
ancient master of bending and his ticket home, being one and the same.
(…)
Aang nodded. “Yep! I just wasn’t supposed to tell anyone since that would reveal that I was
actually a spirit traveler.”
"I spoke out of turn and wouldn't fight. The Fire Lord decreed that I had to find the avatar in
order to return." The matter of fact tone contrasted with the words he was saying.
Aang was still struggling to wrap his head around everything. "You got banished for that? That
sounds like barely anything."
Zuko looked up from his teacup for the first time since he'd started talking. "It wasn't nothing!"
He shouted. "I was disrespectful and I was a coward!" The torches that lit the room flared high.
"Sorry." Aang held up his hands. "You found me though, so you can go home, right?"
Zuko sat back down. "Yeah, I can." He was back to staring at the teacup in his hands. He didn't
quite sound like he believed it. "I'll bring you back and I can finally regain my honor."
"Great! We'll do that and then I can go to the North Pole and find someone to teach me
waterbending!"
"I'm afraid that it won't be that simple," Iroh said, speaking for the first time since he'd asked
Aang what sort of tea he wanted. "The avatar is a threat to the Fire Nation. The Fire Lord will
not let you go so easily."
"Oh," Aang couldn't stop himself from deflating a little at that news. "But it's not like I want to
hurt the Fire Nation. I'm just supposed to make sure the world is at balance."
Iroh gave a sympathetic smile. "That may be the case, but that does not change the fact that if
you come with us to the fire nation, you will find it very difficult to leave."
"It can't be that bad," Aang said, looking to Zuko but Zuko wasn't meeting his eyes, just going
back to staring into his cup of tea.
Iroh kept smiling but it was looking sadder and sadder. "I'm afraid that is that bad."
(…)
Yes. Uh, Aang.” Why was this so hard? It was just words. He could get this right. “I understand
if you don’t want to help me anymore.” It may have only been words but it was hard to say. “I
won’t stop you if you decide to leave.” His honor was closer than it had been in years but Kuzon
was his friend and he owed him at least that much. “But I have to regain my honor. And if the
next time we meet is as enemies, so be it.”
“I still want to help you, Zuko. You’re my friend. I just...” Aang trailed off, going back to petting
Appa. “Isn’t there a way for you to regain your honor without me ending up in a prison cell?”
“Well, did he say how long you needed to capture the Avatar?” Aang asked in that tone of voice
that had always precluded him having a wild scheme that Zuko ended up getting dragged along
on back when they’d been kids. When Zuko had been a kid. Kuzon apparently had never stopped
being a kid.
Zuko glared, trying to ignore what his friend was implying. “I’m not going to commit treason.
I’m loyal to the fire nation.”
“I’m not saying you have to commit treason. I’m just saying, it would sure would be a shame if
the Avatar happened to escape shortly after his capture.” Kuz- Aang grinned and Zuko could feel
himself getting dragged along just like he always had.
He scanned the deck, making sure that all of the crew were still out of hearing range before
continuing in a low voice. “I suppose, if you helped me regain my honor, I’d owe you a debt,”
Zuko said slowly. “It would be dishonorable to let go unpaid.” (This was treason.)
“Not so loud!” Zuko hissed, crossing his arms. “I never said that.” The Avatar was an enemy of
the Fire Nation. (Kuzon was his friend. Kuzon was still 12 and happy and hadn’t lost everything
that mattered.) “...But it would be a shame if the Avatar escaped.” He would repay his debt and
after that, he’d have his honor back and he’d be the heir again. The Avatar was 12. Surely, he
couldn’t stop the greatness of the Fire Nation, not with the comet so close. It wouldn’t be like his
treason really mattered in the long run.
“Great!” Aang grinned. At least his exclamation was quieter this time. “Let’s get your honor
back!”
(…)
“You made the right choice,” he said at last. “Staying wouldn’t have changed anything. You’d
just be dead.” And I wouldn’t have this chance to regain my honor.
“You don’t know that! I’m the avatar . There had to be something I could’ve done.”
“Against an entire army?” He knew that the avatar was powerful. All the research he’d done as
part of his search had told him that. But Avatars had been killed before, hundreds of years ago.
They weren’t immortal. “Sometimes it’s best to avoid the fight.” That’s what the airbenders did,
wasn’t it? They avoided and dodged, never facing their problems head-on, if what he’d read
about them was correct.
“Sometimes you try and you lose everything!” Zuko snapped before he could stop himself. Aang
looked up at him with eyes that made him uncomfortable. Maybe if he told him, he’d understand.
“I went to a war meeting and there was this division and they were just going to use it as bait,
throwing away all their lives. I tried to stop but it didn’t do anything. It just got me banished, it
got me this scar and it lost me my honor. It didn’t change anything.”
“But at least you were there,” Aang said. “At least you tried. That’s got to count for something. I
couldn’t even do that much.”
“I tried and it did nothing! I messed up and now I’ve got to make it right.”
Aang smiled. “I believe that you will. I just don’t know if I can.”
(…)
"Are you sure you wish to return to the Fire Nation with my nephew, Avatar? The world needs
balance." He said it like every elder at the temple said that Aang should be doing avatar duties
instead of playing around with the other acolytes.
Aang shrugged. "And Zuko needs help regaining his honor. He's my friend, I've got to help him."
Iroh took a long slow sip of his tea. "My nephew is still young. What he thinks he needs and
what he truly needs are two different things. After all, the goose bat that envys the sabertooth
moose lion's cave will sooner find itself eaten than safe."
Aang took a sip of his own tea while he contemplated the proverb. "But, the Fire Nation is the
goose bat's cave, isn't it?"
"It should be," Iroh said. He stared off into the distance for a long moment. Then he shook his
head, pulling his focus back to the current moment. "Did Zuko ever tell you how he came to be
banished in the first place?"
"Bit's and pieces," Aang said. "He said fought a fight he shouldn't have. And something about
disrespect and cowardice."
Iroh smiled sadly. "He is none of those things." And then he told Aang the whole story. The
words clumped together into a tight wad in Aang's stomach but Iroh didn't stop talking as the
story got worse and worse.
"Do you see now why I feel it would be better for my nephew to not return home just yet?"
Aang nodded, the story balled up too tightly in his stomach for him to want to drink even Iroh's
delicious peach blossom tea. "I, I'll think about it."
Iroh smiled. "I trust you will make the right decision."
(…)
Zuko didn’t say anything to that, just handed Aang his glider and a bag of supplies. “Goodbye.”
“Goodbye.”
(…)
He wasn’t sure whether or not he felt guilty about what he’d just done. He wasn’t sure whether
he was supposed to feel guilty or not. He had his honor back. He’d kept his promise. And, and
the Fire Nation was just going to win anyway, so it didn’t matter that he’d let its number one
enemy (one of the few friends he had) go. They were superior. They’d be able to capture him
again. (Zuko ignored the way that part of him chafed against that idea.) Everything was going to
be fine. He didn’t need to worry about it, he decided as he slipped back through the trees to the
palace room that felt too large and too still. He was home. Everything was fine. Maybe if told
himself enough times, it’d even be true.
