Assignment 2 Specification
Assignment 2 Specification
This assignment is designed to help you develop skills and strengthen your
understanding of data communications reflected in one or more aspects of the
COMP2250 unit learning outcomes below:
The format for this assignment is a technical report. This means that it must
contain the appropriate structure including a title page, executive summary,
table of contents, and headings for each section of your response. In-text
citations and a reference list must also be present.
Also:
You will need to do some research as part of this assignment and as such
you will need to make references and citations within your report. As this
is a networking unit you should use the IEEE referencing style.
Note that failure to include citations is a form of plagiarism. Significant
sanctions may apply to cases of plagiarism up to and including exclusion
from further study towards your degree.
Usage of Generative AI tools (e.g. ChatGPT, Copilot, etc) must be cited.
The citation must include the prompt(s) used in helping you write your
response.
Your assignment will be submitted electronically via TurnItIn on the unit's iLearn
page. Ensure that you adhere to the following requirements:
44332211_cp2250a2.pdf
All submissions must be in PDF format -- do not submit a MS-Word file (or
anything else other than PDF).
Do not include the text of any of the questions in your submission.
Do not use double-spacing.
Use a sensible, clean font, 10-12 pt in size.
Hand-written or scanned submissions will not be accepted.
Your report should not exceed 10 pages including diagrams, tables, and
figures, but excluding any reference list or bibliography.
How much you write for each question is up to you.
Failure to follow any of the above requirements may result in a loss of 3 marks
for each infraction.
Also note that citation of a non-reliable source may also incur a penalty (e.g.
Wikipedia).
Finally, please note that the late submissions policy is as stated in the
COMP2250 unit guide under the general assessment information section.
Assessment
Your mark will reflect both content and presentation. You will lose marks if there
are problems with the presentation, particularly with clarity. This means that
your answers to each question should be a coherent statement and that the
spelling and grammar of your submission will be taken into account in assessing
its presentation.
For full marks, your answers should be well argued, clear, and coherent.
The tender description indicates that they are having trouble keeping customers
within the shopping centre. After internal consultation with the stores within the
shopping centre, it has been highlighted that the networking infrastructure is
poor. As a result most stores rely upon the local 4G mobile network creating
friction when performing transactions with customers. The stores have also
highlighted that a common customer complaint is about the spotty wireless
connectivity for their mobile phones within the centre. Due to the slow speeds
and disruptions this causes, potential window shoppers end up leaving earlier
than they otherwise would. As such, management have decided to redo all of
the networking infrastructure as an upgrade within the shopping centre.
The building
Ground floor
1 Help Desk
The help desk is equipped with 2 desktop computers and 2 IP phones by the
centre.
A line is provided to the shopping centre by their ISP into this room.
First floor
The office is used by the shopping centre, and is equipped with 4 desktop
computers, 4 IP phones and 1 printer.
Each device stated in the above is provided and maintained by the shopping
centre. Stores operate by running their own software on these computers and
point of sales systems. In addition to the provided equipment, store operators
may add a number of their own devices to the network.
A simplified floor plan for the shopping centre is provided in the Floor plans and
other materials document.
The shopping centre management have decided that they do not have the
capability of planning and implementing this upgrade, ultimately deciding on
issuesing an Invitiation To Tender (ITT). Each tender submission is required to
contain a variety of documents. Your company has decided to submit a bid, and
have tasked you with creating a report with the items listed below.
The LAN design should satisfy the needs of both customers and stores. All
stationary devices (e.g. within stores, office) are expected to use wired
connections. All areas should have good wireless coverage so customers and
staff are able to reliably use their own wireless devices without interruption in
the centre.
Draw a diagram (physical or logical) of all machines and devices in the shopping
centres LAN. Clearly label all layer 2 & layer 3 devices that will be needed to
provide internal and external connectivity. All subnets and/or VLANs in the
building should be clearly identified in your diagram.
You are to assume that cabling is routed through the ceiling of each floor, and
as such can take any path from node to node.
As part of the tender documentation, based on the network diagram in Part 3.1
and the details provided in Part 2.
1. Put together a budget that includes the costs for all equipment including
desktop computers, displays, IP phones, printers, and networking devices
in addition to labour costs for delivery, installation, configuration and
testing.
2. Propose a schedule in a Gantt chart clearly indicating how long it should
take your team to complete the job (i.e. the start and end date of all
work), the tasks and activities involved.
Your company has been advised that if they win the tender, work can begin
anytime after 01-06-2025, and must be completed by 31-10-2025.
A small network upgrade & test at a Parramatta location, taking 1 week &
2 days respectively.
A rewiring of outdoor platforms at a Lower North Shore train station as
preventative maintenance, taking 5 days.
A network test and upgrade plan design of a Bathurst location, taking 5
days.
Your asset / risk control spreadsheet might take up one page, but you can also
use a second page to elaborate on your reasons / choices if you feel you need to
provide further clarity. For instance: How did you prioritise the assets? How did
you identify potential risks? How did you land on your chosen risk mitigation
strategies/avoidance measures?
Review the proposed network diagram in 3.1 to ensure that the solution meets
the security and data privacy requirements of stores. All communications within
the stores contain private information about their sales, stock delivery planning,
employee information, and operational communications.
Explain how your LAN design addesses the above. Does your LAN need to be
amended? if so, what impacts will these amendments have on your cost
estimates?
e.g. if you need extra or more expensive equipment, state the revisions to the
previous project management documentation (i.e. highlight what changes are
being made).
This section of your report should not need to be more than two pages long. One
page for the revised logical or physical diagram, and up to one page identifying
what changes you have made, why you made those changes and/or additions to
address the security and privacy requirements.
As part of your tender, you have been asked to advise the Tender Review Panel
about certain boundaries and ethical obligations to consider. As part of the ACS
Code of Professional Ethics (links in the week 8 lecture section in iLearn), what
would be good ethical considerations to bring to the attention of the Tender
Review Panel? Specifically:
Answer all the above in a well-structured technical report for your boss, who will
be using your design, solutions, proposals, considerations and insights in the
Company’s tender documentation. As such, you are expected to include an
executive summary, conclusions/summary, and recommendations sections.
4.1 Elegant LAN design that will meet all stakeholders' needs. Assumptions,
considerations and insights explaining and backing up your decisions.
4.3 Risk assessment. Security and privacy issues when designing a LAN. Identify
security risks and potential privacy violations; suggest remedies for those. How
is security and privacy addressed in your design? Justification of the changes
made in the initial proposal; if no changes have been made, explain how are
those addressed in the initial design.
4.4 What are the ethical principles that have guided you throughout your tender
document preparation? Justify a correlation of the scenario with the Code of
Professional Ethics items.
4.5 Good report structure, spelling, and grammar usage throughout the report.
5. A final note
Please remember that you are writing documentation to be included in a tender
proposal, not doing any implementation. You are analysing the shopping centres
needs, pointing out some security and ethical considerations that you believe
should be taken into account, and providing your own suggestions based on the
concepts you have been exposed to in COMP2250 and the resources you have
found and consulted while working on this project. If you use any external
sources, then you must cite them as stated in part 1 of this specification.
The Tender Review Committee may decide to reject your tender; they may
request that you amend parts of it and might decide to ignore your
recommendations and considerations.
Good luck!
