Safety Rules and Precautionary Guidelines when Performing Needlework

General guidelines to follow before doing any needlework:

1. If your hair is long enough, that it gets in the way while you work, make sure you comb it or tie it back
before starting to work.
2. You may remove jewelry, like a bracelet or ring, that may get in the way of stitching and hamper your
progress.
3. Be easy on your eyes. Avoid eye strain while working on your project. Work in a room with good
lighting. The light should fall on the working surface from your left or front side. Take breaks to rest
your eyes, as needed.

Safety precautions and precautionary guidelines when working with needles, pins, knitting needles,
and hooks:

1. Keep your eyes at a distance from the needle as you work.

2. Keep needles and pins inside the case after working and keep out of reach of small children. Do not
leave them at the workplace, do not stick them in clothes, and do not put them in your mouth.
3. Use thimble when sewing.
4. Keep sharp ends of pins away from you.
5. Do not use rusty and bent needles and pins.
6. When crocheting, remember that the hook size indicated on the yarn label is just a suggested starting
point. Hook sizes are not always the same and may vary from one manufacturer to another. Slight
differences in the shape of the hook might change the way you hold it and do your stitches. If you are
aware that your work is too tight, choose a larger crochet needle to use. If you know that your work is
too loose, choose a smaller crochet needle. There might be a crochet hook that fatigues your hand less,
and there might be one that feels exactly better in your hands. Choose the best hook that you can use.
7. Do not change hooks as you go along with your work. You definitely would want your stitches to be
consistent throughout the entire work. Changing hooks along the way risks your design. Experiment
with hooks before starting a project.

Safety precautions and precautionary guidelines when working with fabric. thread, yarn, and
accessories:
1. Keep all small parts in their prescribed containers or bags with lock.
2. Do not bite through the thread with your teeth or tear it with your hands. Use scissors instead, as you
should.
3. The length of a thread when sewing must not exceed the length of the distance to the elbow.
4. Use ball of yarn instead of: skeins when doing crochet work. Skeins of yarn can easily tangle towards
the end. Balls of yarn are less likely to tangle.
5. Keep cats out of the working area when you are crocheting. Cats love to play with yarn, especially
balls of yarn. A cat can also ruin crochet article without your knowing it.
6. Position the ball of yarn properly that it can unwind easily as you crochet.
7. Clear the floor from any spool of yarn to avoid trips and falls.

Safety precautions when working with scissors:

1. Handle sharp tools carefully. Hand over the scissors with the handle towards the person. Keep the
blades closed when not in use.
2. Keep the scissors inside their case or in the drawer when not in use to avoid accident.
3. Do not leave the blades of scissors open.
4. Do not use scissors while moving around.
5. When working, hold the material with your other hand so that your fingers are away from the blade.

Safety operating precautions when using the sewing machine:

1. Only one person should operate the sewing machine.
2. Do not touch the sewing machine when it is being used.
3. Turn off the sewing machine when making adjustments to it.
4. Never use the sewing machine at high speed.
5. Avoid pushing or pulling the fabric while sewing. Let the machine do the work. Use your hands to
guide the fabric without forcing it.
6. Take the take-up lever in the upper position before pulling out the fabric.
7. Check electric sewing machines and their cords before using them to make sure that they are fully
assembled and well maintained. Also check other adjustments and setting carefully before
commencing any sewing operation.
8. Follow instructions when using sewing machines such as high-speed or embroidery machines.
9. Be careful when feeding fabric into the machine.

Ways of Caring for your Needlecraft Articles

1. Safely wash your needlework by doing the following:
a. Pre-rinse your stitched article under cold running water.
b. Use a small amount of mild detergent when washing your needlecraft article.
c. When ironing a cross-stitch article, place it face down between two clean towels (to protect your
stitches from being crushed) and press lightly with warm iron. Never use hot iron. To remove
creases or to lines, use the steam setting on your iron but be careful not to use too much in order
for some colored threads not to run.
d. Wash each piece of needlework separately.

2. Dry cleaning embroidery and cross stitch articles is not recommended; the chemicals in most dry
cleaners are harsh for stitch work.
3. Keep your hands and work area clean while stitching. This can keep your work clean and in good
condition. Hence, there is no need for any other type of cleaning after.
