NO. 7
SIMPLE MACHINES

I. OBJECTIVES: At the end of the activity, the students should be able to:
(a) identify simple machines;
(b) understand the differences between the types of simple machines and the uses of each
type;
(c) classify simple machines according to their type; and
(d) classify lever according to their class.

II. ANSWER WHAT IS ASKED.

A. Identify the simple machine being described.
a. This reduces the friction of moving objects. Wheel and Axle
b. This hold things together. Screw
c. This uses a rope and can change the direction of a force. Pulley
d. This is similar to a seesaw that can lift an object. Pulley
e. This can split an object apart. Wedge
f. This simple machine is found on the head of this ax. Wedge
g. The bottle cap is an example of this simple machine. Screw
h. The door knob and rod make up this simple machine. Wheel and Axle
i. The screwdriver is an example of this simple machine. Wheel and axle
j. This is an inclined plane wrapped around a pole. Screw

B. On the line by each picture, write the type of simple machine.

c. Use the words to solve the crossword puzzle. (Some words will not be used.)
E. Answer the following briefly but intellectually.

Just like all simple machines, an inclined plane makes work easier. A wedge
looks like two inclined planes stuck together. The edge of a wedge is often called
the blade. The big difference between a wedge and an inclined plane is that,
while the inclined plane stays still, a wedge moves to do its work.

A lever is a long bar that can turn around a point, which is called a fulcrum. When the
fulcrum is in the middle, you can put a heavy object on one end and push down on the
other end to lift it. The closer the fulcrum is to the object that you are lifting, the easier it
is to lift. If you've ever played on a seesaw (or teeter totter), then you've used a lever.

The bottom of the bathtub is inclined. It leads towards the drain. They make it
so that water will go straight to the drain and won’t just settle. It would then
take force to keep the water up the incline (away from the drain). That follows
the definition of an incline plane.

Doors are basically levers. The farther from the pivot point you apply force, the
less force you’ll have to use. So putting the handle in the center, closer to the
hinges, will be harder than putting the knob at the edge farthest from the
hinges.

For me, wheel and axle has the most impacts in our lives. It is widely used for
making machines, vehicles and other essentials in our lives. The wheel and axle
is essentially a modified lever, but it can move a load farther than a lever can.
I. CONCLUSION AND GENERALIZATION:

After performing the activity, we concluded that simple machines are

mechanisms that have hardly any or no moving components and only use one
motion and energy to do work easier. Simple machine has 6 types; the single
inclined plane or ramp-a flat surface with one end higher than the other; screw-
spiral shaped that attaches two objects together; wedge-made of two inclined
plane sticked together that split up something; wheel and axle- made of a
wheel attached to a rod; lever- made up of a bar that moves on a fixed point
and; pulley- made of a wheel with a rope or chain. These types of machines are
also classified into two groups, the inclined plane ( ramp, screw, wedge) and
the lever group (lever, pulley, wheel and axle). Inclined plane group adjusts its
slope to perform a specific task and has no parts, while the lever group moves
around the fulcrum to lift or drop an object and was consist of three parts
(fulcrum, load, effort). And above all, the lever group can be classified into
three, the first, second and third class. On the first rate lever, all of the parts
moves or participates because its fulcrum is located in the middle of effort and
load, next is the second rate lever which load is located between the fulcrum
and effort, and last is the third rate lever where the effort is completely not
being used for it is located at the middle of load and fulcrum.
