The Product Classification Model Using Robotic Arm and Image Processing won
the Second Prize in the 2024 Hanoi Youth and Children Innovation Competition
organized by VIFOTEC.
With the rapid development of automation in industrial production, the demand for
automated product classification systems to replace manual labor is increasing.
Modern automatic production lines not only improve productivity but also ensure
precision and stability, which are crucial for industrial competition. However, in
Vietnam, most small and medium enterprises still rely on manual production
methods, leading to wasted resources and low productivity.
To contribute to this trend, our team researched and developed the "Product
Classification Model Using Robotic Arm and Image Processing" for the 2024
Youth Innovation Competition. This model not only demonstrates the automatic
classification of products based on color, shape, and size but also collects and
stores data for smart production purposes.
The model can be implemented using widely available, low-cost devices, making
it suitable for diverse business needs. We hope this idea will inspire small and
medium-sized enterprises in Vietnam to enhance research and apply automation,
thus mastering technology and reducing dependence on imported equipment,
contributing to national economic development.
3. Detailed Feature Description
Our automatic product classification model uses a robotic arm, camera system, and
mechanical devices to enable efficient production without direct human labor.
People are instead involved in designing, programming, and monitoring the
system.
The robotic arm plays a vital role in picking and placing differently colored
products into correct locations.
Based on the obtained dimensions, parts of the robotic arm are drawn, assembled,
and tested:
Angle brackets are used to easily assemble the aluminum profiles without
the need for welding. The use of aluminum profiles allows for easy
assembly, disassembly, and repair without causing damage to the material.

The technology of product classification using a robotic arm and image processing
has wide applications across industries such as automotive, electronics, food,
healthcare, and agriculture. It improves classification accuracy, enhances
production efficiency, and reduces classification and packaging errors.
Automated color-based orange sorting lines after harvest are already widely
used abroad.
Achieved Results
The automatic product classification system using a robotic arm and image
processing is a modern technology that optimizes manufacturing, packaging, and
goods management. It automatically classifies products based on attributes such as
color, size, and shape, commonly used in factories, warehouses, and production
facilities.
System Goals:
This technology not only improves goods management efficiency but also reduces
costs, enhances quality, and promotes automation in production.
Modern technology and machinery are reducing the need for direct human
involvement in production, with automated production lines becoming a trend,
effectively addressing issues of productivity, accuracy, and stability. These lines
consist of interconnected workstations managed by electronic transfer and control
systems.
Image recognition and processing are promising technologies applied in various
industries by major corporations such as Tesla, Google, and Adobe Systems.
Utilizing image processing for product classification in production lines promises
optimal efficiency and great development potential.
We hope that our Automatic Product Classification Model will prove feasible in
both product design and real-world applications in Vietnam. We aspire for this
idea to drive the modernization of production technology in supply chains, similar
to how Vietnam successfully mechanized agricultural production at low costs
without relying on expensive imported equipment.
