Assignment 1 2023

This assignment involves calculations related to gas absorption processes in chemical engineering. It includes determining the minimum wash oil rate for a coal gas scrubbing process, the number of stages required for separation, and the overall transfer units needed for an acetone-air mixture. Additionally, it covers ammonia removal from air using water scrubbing, requiring the calculation of the tower height for effective ammonia removal.

GAS ABSORPTION TAKE HOME EXERCISE

A coal gas is to be freed of its light oil by scrubbing with wash oil as an absorbent. The
circumstances are as follows:
Gas enters the column at a rate of 0.3m3/s at 260C and containing 5% by volume of light
oil vapors. The light oil is assumed to be entirely benzene and a 99% recovery is required.
The wash oil enters at 260C containing 0.0075 mole fraction benzene.
Determine the minimum wash oil rate. [15]
If an oil-circulation rate 1.8times the minimum is used, determine the number of stages required
to effect the separation. [10]
Total pressure is 1 atmosphere and the vapor pressure of benzene at 260C is
13.33kN/m2.
An acetone–air mixture containing 0.015 mole fraction of acetone has the mole fraction
reduced to 1 per cent of this value by countercurrent absorption with water in a packed
tower. The gas flowrate G’ is 1 kg/m2s of air and the water enters at 1.6 kg/m2s. For this
system, Henry’s law holds and ye = 1.75x, where ye is the mole fraction of acetone in the
vapour in equilibrium with a mole fraction x in the liquid. How many overall transfer units
are required? [25]
Experimental data are provided for an absorption system to be used for scrubbing ammonia
(NH3) from air with water. The water rate is 300 lb/min and the gas rate is 250 lb/min at
728F. The applicable equilibrium data for the ammonia–air system is shown in the table
on page 2. The air to be scrubbed has 1.5% (mass basis) NH3 at 728F and 1 atm pressure
and is to be vented with 95% of the ammonia recovered. The inlet scrubber water is
ammonia-free. [25]
