I. INTRODUCTION
1. Problem statement
In Vietnam, pickleball as a sport has become wildly popular young adults, but the relationship
between social, self, and demand for this sport remains undefined. This paper will focus on the
failure to understand how social and self-identities shape participation in pickleball in the
Vietnamese context. Despite earlier work on the role of social identity in sports participation,
especially in youth or community athletes (Murray et al., 2022; Rees et al., 2015), there is little
research relating to adults in Vietnam specifically and how identity shape their engagement with
pickleball.
The purpose of this study is to close the literature gap by explaining how identity constructions
impact sports participation, more specifically, within the context of a quickly expanding sport
like pickleball in Vietnam. Through integrating social identity theory and self-categorization
theory, this research will add on to the conversation on sports psychology and community
engagement to provide strategies on how to engage youngsters in health promoting behaviors
through the sport of pickleball.
2. Research objectives
The fundamental goal of this study is to look at the link between social identity, self-identity, and
desire for pickleball in Vietnam. The study's specific objectives are to: (1) investigate how social
identity influences motivation to participate in pickleball among younger adults; (2) investigate
the role of self-identity in shaping individual experiences and perceptions of pickleball; and (3)
assess the overall demand for pickleball as a recreational activity in Vietnam, taking cultural and
social factors into account.
To accomplish these goals, the following research questions will lead the study: (1) How does
social identity influence a persons' willingness to engage in pickleball in Vietnam? (2) How does
self-identity affect the experiences of younger people playing pickleball? (3) What cultural
variables influence the demand for pickleball among young people in Vietnam? (4) How does
community opinion of pickleball affect individual involvement rates? (5) How may identity-
related results be used to design measures to increase pickleball participation among young
generations?

II. LITERATURE REVIEW
1. Social Identity Theory (SIT) and sports participation
According to social identity theory (SIT) developed by Henri Tajfel and John Turner, individuals
derive a part of their self-concept from their membership in social groups (Rees et al., 2015).
This is particularly relevant in sports as team affiliation and community engagement can have a
huge impact on the amount of participation. For example, Wang et al. (2018) suggest that social
identity influences behavioral intention of attending the sport events, that is, the stronger the
identification to a sport or community, the higher the participation of the person. Meeprom and
Dansiri (Meeprom & Dansiri, 2020) echoes this, claiming self-congruity mediates motives why
people show to sports events, ideally saying that people attend sports events that are in line with
their self-identity and also their social affiliations.

In pickleball, understanding how self-identity influences participation is crucial. In fact,
youngsters can view themselves as athletes or active community members - anyone involved in
pickleball can be motivated by that. The research of a strong relation with sports to self-identity
indicates that people with this strong relation have more chance to participate consistently
(Parker et al., 2022). Additionally, according to Goldman et al.'s (Goldman et al., 2016) optimal
distinctiveness theory, people tend to find an equilibrium between being part of the group but
being different in some ways. For the Vietnamese, this balance may be particularly relevant since
they may be navigating traditional cultural expectations while seeking new forms of social
engagement through sports like pickleball.
The demand for pickleball in Vietnam is significantly influenced by the cultural context in
Vietnam. The growth of pickleball depends on societal perception and the culture of the sport.
According to Tonts and Atherley (2010), sports may aid the development of a sense of place
identity equally important in the creation of pickleball as a community activity. Pickleball’s
integration into the local culture can position it as a new favorite pass time, mainly for people
looking for social interaction and physical activity.
Additionally, population based social trends - in particular, health and wellness trends among the
young part of the populations - may also be driving rising appetite for pickleball. According to
research of Campo et al. (Campo et al., 2019), group membership in sports can contribute to the
promotion of shared meanings and collective identities, which may be particularly enjoying in
such a collectivist culture as Vietnam. These findings indicate that this could also be a medium
through which to promote the formation of social ties in citizens and improve upon social
cohesion.
This proposed study will try to assess the association between social identity, self-identification
and the need for pickleball by young individual in Vietnam. Despite the increase in popularity of
the sport of pickleball, there is little empirical research investigating the impact of these identity

dimensions to involvement in the sport. Knowing these dynamics is quite important to
encouraging pickleball as a smidgen of a leisure sport that could enhance social collaboration
and physical prosperity among Vietnam’s young citizens.
2. Research method
In this study, the mixed method approach, a combination of the quantitative and qualitative
research methodologies will be employed. A survey will be conducted in order to collect data
from the participants’ social identity, their self-identity, and their motivations to play pickleball.
The qualitative component will include in-depth interviews used to explore personal narratives
and experiences of the participant with pickleball. The result is a dual approach that provides a
complete understanding of those factors driving participation as well as the context specific
nuances that may not be revealed from surveying alone.
3. Sampling
The target group for this study will be young individuals aged 18 to 35 who are presently playing
or have indicated an interest in playing pickleball in Vietnam. A purposive sampling technique
will be employed and will only select participants who have prior experience or have expressed
interest in the sport. The quantitative survey will have a sample size of about 200 participants,
with a subset of 20 chosen for qualitative interviews. This mix of sample sizes will provide a
strong dataset for analysis while also allowing for in-depth investigation of individual
perspectives.
4. Data collection method
Two phases of data collection will take place. The first phase will include the development of a
structured questionnaire, which is on existing literature on social identity and self-identity in
sports (Hartmann et al., 2011; Lock & Heere, 2017; Meeprom & Dansiri ,2020). The
psychological inventory for the questionnaire will include validated scales of social identity, self-
identity, and motivation for participation in pickleball. Local pickleball clubs, community
centers, and online public forums will be used to recruit participants, and participants will be
able to fill out data via online survey tools to make it easier for everyone.
The qualitative data in the second phase will be collected using semi structured interviews with a
subset of participants. The aim of these interviews is to explore personal experiences,

motivations and perceptions of playing pickleball. A conversational approach will be taken in
order to make participants feel comfortable telling their stories and insights. All interviews will
take place where the audio will be recorded and transcribed for thematic analysis of key themes
and patterns derived from social and self-identity contexts surrounding pickleball participation.
IV. CONCLUSION
To sum up, this research proposal aims to explore the critical interplay between social identity,
self-identity, and the demand for pickleball among young adults in Vietnam. Using a mixed-
methods approach, the research aims to fill a vacuum in the literature by exploring how identity
factors impact involvement in this rapidly increasing sport. The data will provide light on why
the young choose to play pickleball, as well as the cultural and social variables that influence
their experiences. This study will add to the larger conversation on sports psychology and
community involvement by proposing techniques for promoting better lives among Vietnamese
people via pickleball.
