QUESTION 1: INVESTIGATIVE REPORT

INVESTIGATION REPORT ON SPORTS AWARENESS AND PARTICIPATION

AT ORIGON COLLEGE AND NEARBY SCHOOLS TO IMPROVE HEALTH
AND FITNESS

1. TERMS OF REFERENCE

Mr Themba on February 2, 2025 responsible for club secretary of the

Empilweni Youth Club Mr Rudzani to conduct research on the
awareness and enthusiasm of the students of Origon College and
nearby schools to understand sports. The goal of this study is to find
out how participation in sports may enhance students physical and
emotional health and decrease the incidence of conditions such as
chronic obesity or high blood pressure. The recommendations of the
report will be gazetted to Mr Themba for public comment by 28
February 2025.

2. PROCEDURES

2.1 A questionnaire was distributed amongst students at the college

and neighbouring schools to determine their levels of interest in
sports.

2.2 Students, teachers, and sports coaches were interviewed in

order to gain a deeper understanding of the difficulties and
advantages of playing sports.

2.3 Using data from schools and colleges, historical sports

participation rates were analyzed to find trends in student’s physical
activity levels

2.4 Observations were taken at athletic events and physical

education classes to gauge students’ interest in and participation in
various sports.

3. FINDINGS

3.1. The questionnaire revealed that most of the students showed

interest in sports, especially soccer and netball. However, they mostly
could not participate because of the expected sports uniform like
soccer boots and netball training shoes which they could not afford.
Some of the respondents raised concerns about the sporting time
which was mostly in the afternoon and their scholar transport
arrangements could not accommodate that.

3.2. When interviewed, students expressed an interest in athletics, but

mentioned they were missing support and motivation. Teachers and
sports coaches pointed out that students involvement in physical
activities was being held back by a scarcity of facilities and equipment.

2
3.3. Based on an examination of school and college documents,
participation in sports has dropped in the past years. The data
revealed a noticeable decrease both in the number of students joining
team sports and in those engaging in regular physical exercise.

3.4. Observations during sports events and physical education classes

indicated that only a few students actively took part in sports. While
some children showed enthusiasm but didn't receive the right
guidance or encouragement, many others simply watched from the
sidelines.

4. CONCLUSIONS

4.1. Fitness training enhances the reduction of chronic diseases such

as hypertension and obesity and boosts the immune system

4.2. Many students are passionate about sports like soccer, netball,
and athletics but are held back by money issues. They simply can't
afford the necessary gear. On top of that, it's tough for them to join
afternoon sports because the schedules clash with their rides home.

4.3. When students don't have what they need and aren't excited,
they're less likely to get involved. It's hard for them to take part in
physical activities when there aren't enough sports facilities,
equipment, or supportive coaches and teachers. Without proper
resources and encouragement, it's a real struggle for them to stay
active.

5. RECOMMENDATIONS

5.1. Implementing fitness and wellness initiatives could teach students

about the long-term health benefits of regular physical activity such as
preventing obesity and hypertension.

5.2. We should allocate more money towards constructing and upkeep

of sports facilities and acquiring essential gear.

5.3. Schools should think about adjusting sports practice schedules,

maybe by offering early morning or weekend sessions, to help
students who rely on school transportation.
