Consider a variable resistor connected across a source with

This power is a maximum when the denominator is a minimum. It can be
shown that the denominator is a minimum when R = r.

Hence, the power transferred from a source to the load is a
maximum when the resistance of the load is equal to the internal
resistance of the source.
