1. Client Requirements
The Federal Polytechnic Ilaro, Nigeria, is experiencing challenges in energy monitoring and
control within its academic and administrative facilities. These challenges include energy
wastage, inability to track usage in real-time, and lack of automated load regulation during
peak hours or non-operational periods.

To address these issues, the institution has expressed the following requirements:
- Implementation of smart energy meters for different buildings.
- Integration of load control mechanisms to automatically switch off or regulate non-
essential loads.
- Real-time energy monitoring and data logging for analysis and future planning.
- Scalable system design for possible expansion across other facilities within the institution.
- User-friendly interface accessible via computer or mobile device.

2. Specification
The proposed system will include the following features:

2.1 Smart Energy Meter

- Measures voltage, current, power factor, energy consumed.
- Microcontroller-based (e.g., Arduino or ESP32).
- Real-time data transmission using Wi-Fi or GSM module.
- LCD display for local reading.

2.2 Load Control System

- Automated control of non-critical loads (e.g., lighting, air conditioning).
- Integration with relay switches.
- Programmable thresholds based on time or usage.

2.3 Data Monitoring and Interface

- Remote dashboard access through web or mobile app.
- Real-time charts and logging.
- Alert notifications via SMS or email when thresholds are crossed.

2.4 Safety and Compliance

- Surge protection.
- Circuit isolation and relay protection.
- Enclosure designed for safety and environmental protection.

2.5 Scalability
- Modular design that supports additional units.
- Cloud-based data storage and management for multiple locations.

5. Execution Period
The implementation of this project is estimated to span 6 weeks, broken down as follows:

Week Activity Description

1 Procurement of materials and components

2 Assembly of energy meter modules and

control units

3 Programming of microcontrollers and load

logic

4 Development of monitoring interface and

testing

5 Field installation and initial calibration
