The National Institute of Advanced Studies (NIAS) was conceived and established in 1988
by the vision and initiative of the late Mr J.R.D. Tata primarily to nurture a broad base of
scholars, managers and leaders to address complex and important challenges faced by
society through interdisciplinary approaches. The institute also engages in advanced
multidisciplinary research in the areas of natural sciences and engineering humanities,

Applications invited from eligible candidates for the position of Research Scientist (01)
to work on a project conducting research on Natural Resource Availability and Utilization
Plan for the Western Ghat and Eastern Ghat Biodiversity Hotspots using geospatial
technologies and socio-economic and ecological surveys.

About the Project: Develop Natural Resource Utilization Plan for Biodiversity
Hotspots The project aims at understanding the natural resource availability and
utilization pattern in biodiversity hotspots in two study regions, namely, the Wester Ghats
(Karnataka) and the Eastern Ghats (Odisha), with emphasis on interactions between
recent natural resource dynamics and socio-economic factors of resource demand and
utilization. Use the above understanding to develop sustainable models for resource
utilization in the future. The project will extensively make use of field surveys
(ecological and socio-economic), satellite data and integrated geospatial analysis and
document its findings.

Job Description:
The candidate will contribute to all project activities, including leading field crews, survey
design, data collection, analysis and Geospatial integration, documentation, stakeholder
engagement, presenting findings to stakeholders and at conferences, and conducting
outreach workshops.

Duration: Initially for 22 months.

Qualifications: potential candidates should have a PhD in Environmental


Sciences/Forestry or equivalent disciplines with a minimum of Five years of post-PhD
relevant research experience in some of the areas listed here. Software’s skills like
ArcGIS, Q-GIS, ERDAS Imagine, Google earth engine, Bioclimatic, land cover change
modelling. Candidates must have skills around, forest disturbance regime, wildlife
conflict, forest fires, & invasion mapping using the satellite remote sensing and GIS, field
data collection and integration of quantitative data. The candidate should have
demonstrated research aptitude and publications in the some of the activities listed
above.

Compensation: Based on experience. Competitive with top research organizations in India.
