This document outlines a comprehensive examination for the Design of Steel Structures course at Birla Institute of Technology & Science, Pilani, Hyderabad Campus. It includes five design problems related to steel structures, such as a portal frame, bridge truss diagonal, column design, steel beam for a hall, and a welded plate girder. Each problem specifies loads, dimensions, and material specifications to guide the design process.

BIRLA INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY & SCIENCE, PILANI

HYDERABAD CAMPUS
SECOND SEMESTER 2017-18
CE F343 Design of Steel Structures
COMPREHENSIVE EXAMINATION
Date: 12-05-2018(FN) Time: 3 hours Max.Marks:40

 Assume suitable data and draw neat sketches wherever necessary. Use steel of grade Fe 410.
 ISA 100 x 75 x 8; ISMC 350; ISMC 400; ISMB 350; ISWB 300; ISWB 350 are in stock.

1. A single storey and single bay portal frame ABCD hinged at the supports A and D carries a
concentrated gravity load (P) 120 kN at the midpoint E of the beam BC and a horizontal force (H)
of 40 kN at the beam level as shown in Fig.1 at service state with load factor 1.7. Select suitable
sections for beam and columns. The plastic moment capacity of beam is twice that of columns.
(6 marks)

2. Design a bridge truss diagonal subjected to a factored load of 300 kN. The length of the diagonal
is 3 m. The tension member is connected to a gusset plate 16 mm thick with one line of 20 mm
diameter bolts of grade 8.8. assume pitch of 55 mm and edge distance of 40 mm. (7 marks)

3. Design a column of effective length 5.9 m. It is subjected to a factored axial compressive load of
2000 kN. Provide two channels back to back connected with battens by site welded connection.
Assume allowable compressive stress as 190 MPa for trail section. (8 marks)

4. Design a steel beam section for supporting roof of a big hall for the following data and apply the
usual checks. (9 marks)
Clear span: 6.5 m
End bearings: 150 mm
c/c spacing of beams: 3 m
Imposed load on the beam: 10 kN/m2
Dead load (inclusive of self-weight): 4 kN/m2
Restriction on beam depth: 375 mm
Assume the compression flange of beam is laterally supported and stiff bearing of 100 mm.

5. A welded plate girder is 24 m in span and laterally restrained throughout. It has to support a
uniform load of 100 kN/m throughout the span exclusive of self-weight. Design the girder
without intermediate transverse stiffeners. Design the cross section, the end load bearing stiffener
and connections. (10 marks)
