Objectives:
About practicals skills
1. Based on the repair and maintenance manual, complete the regular inspection
of the car.
2. Timely replenishment of the failure of lubricating oils and cooling water.
3. Use the tool kit on the vehicle to change the spare tire.
4. During vehicle inspection, attention should be paid to occupational safety, not
to obstruct traffic or pedestrians.
5. Before changing tires, it is necessary to do an excellent job of preparation to
ensure safety.
About theoretical knowledge
1. Students could briefly describe the meaning of regular vehicle inspection.
2. Students could briefly present the main contents and steps in the routine
inspection of Mitsubishi Xpander and SYM T880.

1 BASICS & TERMS

A. Exterior Care
Purpose of Exterior Care:
 Clean and maintain the beauty of the vehicle by washing it to remove newly accumulated
dirt on the surface, such as mud, dust, tree sap, insects, and to protect the coating layers.
 Cars should be washed at least once a week to prevent stains that can damage the surface
of the vehicle and its coating layers.
 Protect exterior components from the effects of weather, especially in tropical
environments with high temperatures and intense sunlight, which can cause paint to fade
quickly, accelerate the aging of plastic and rubber parts, and tarnish metal trims.

B. Interior Care
Purpose of Interior Care:
 The car interior is a small, enclosed space that is directly affected by ultraviolet rays and
passenger activities such as eating, drinking, and smoking, which can leave residues and
odors.

 Interior care helps maintain cleanliness, provides comfort, and protects the health of
vehicle occupants.
 Protects details such as leather seats and plastic panels from aging due to sunlight and
UV rays, preserving the vehicle’s aesthetics.

C. Engine Compartment Cleaning and Care
The engine compartment is a crucial part of the car, containing various mechanical
components, electronic systems, and cooling systems. Over time, dust, grease, and other
contaminants can accumulate in the engine bay, affecting the engine’s performance.
Therefore, cleaning and maintaining the engine compartment is essential to ensure the car
operates stably and reliably.
1. Keep the Engine Clean and Improve Aesthetics
 Remove dust and grease from the engine, keeping the engine bay tidy and clean.
 Enhances the car’s professional appearance, especially during maintenance or resale.
2. Early Detection of Damage in the Engine Compartment
 Easily identify signs of oil leaks, coolant leaks, corroded wires, or damaged components.
 Helps detect issues early, preventing serious malfunctions and reducing high repair costs.
3. Improve Engine Cooling, Ensure Performance, and Reduce Fuel Consumption
 Dust and grease can obstruct the cooling process, causing the engine to overheat and
reducing performance.

Precautions When Cleaning the Engine Compartment:
1. Do not clean the engine while it is still hot.
2. Start the engine and check its condition before cleaning.
3. Turn off the engine and remove the key from the car.
4. Cover parts that need to be protected from water.
5. Use a low-pressure water hose for cleaning.
D. Car Polishing
Car paint not only serves an aesthetic purpose but also plays a role in protecting the vehicle’s
surface from external elements. However, over time, the paint can degrade due to various
reasons, leading to the need for polishing to restore the car’s beauty and protective qualities.
1. Environmental Impact
 UV rays from sunlight oxidize the paint surface, causing the color to fade gradually.
 Acid rain, dust, sand, and salt mist can corrode or dull the car’s paint finish.
2. Natural Factors
 Bird droppings and tree sap contain acids that can corrode the paint surface if not cleaned
promptly.
 Rainwater with impurities can leave stains and diminish the car’s shine.
3. Mistakes During Car Cleaning
 Incorrect washing methods, using dirty cloths or the wrong cleaning solutions, can cause
light scratches on the paint surface.
 Not drying the car properly after washing, allowing water to air-dry, can result in stains
and reduce glossiness.

4. Physical Impacts
 Scratches from impacts, such as flying stones or sharp objects (keys, nails, rings, etc.),
can damage or chip the paint.
 Minor collisions while parking or driving can leave small scratches that affect the overall
aesthetics.
Given these factors, car polishing is essential to restore gloss, protect the paint layer, and
maintain the vehicle’s aesthetic and market value. This process helps remove minor
scratches, enhances the car’s color, and creates a protective layer that repels dust and water
more effectively.

Note: Car paint polishing requires extensive practice to master; therefore, this content will not be
included in the practical exercises of Lesson 2.

2 PRACTICE
2.1 Preparation

The workspace (4 x 8 meters) must be spacious, well-ventilated, and equipped with a good
lighting system (see Figure 1). Tools, equipment, and materials must be fully and carefully
prepared, including a trash bin (used for collecting metal and non-metal waste), wheel chocks, a
flashlight, cleaning cloths, gloves, and other necessary items.

2.2 Identifying

Before starting vehicle care practice, students must clearly identify the key areas on the car.
Correctly identifying the work areas will help organize the vehicle care process in a scientific,
effective, and safe manner. The main practice areas include:

Exterior
The exterior is the outer part of the car, directly exposed to environmental factors such as dirt,
rain, UV rays, and other elements. When practicing exterior care, students will work on the
following parts:
 Car body: Paint surface, car windows, door handles.
 Lights: Headlights, taillights, turn signals, fog lights.
 Side mirrors: Inspection, cleaning, and maintenance.
 Wheels and tires: Cleaning the rims, tires, and checking tire pressure.
 Front and rear bumpers: Inspecting and cleaning dirt and scratches.
 Windshield and wipers: Cleaning and maintaining the wiper system.

 Dashboard and control panel: Dust removal and maintenance of plastic and leather

 Steering wheel and gear shift: Cleaning and disinfecting due to frequent contact.
 Seats: Cleaning leather or fabric seats, removing dirt and odors.
 Floor mats and ceiling: Cleaning dust and treating stains.
 Doors and interior door handles: Cleaning and maintenance of surfaces.

Engine Compartment
The engine compartment is a crucial area that directly affects the vehicle's performance.

cooling, and extends the engine's lifespan. The practice areas include:
 Engine cover and protective casing: Removing dust and grease from surfaces.
 Rubber and plastic components: Inspecting and protecting with specialized solutions.
 Electrical system and battery: Cleaning battery terminals and checking connections.
 Hoses and cooling system: Inspecting for leaks and cleaning dirt buildup.

Identifying the key areas for car care helps students understand the correct cleaning
and maintenance methods for each component. This ensures effective learning and
practical application in professional vehicle maintenance and care.

2.3 Work Sheet

Before performing any car care procedures, students must conduct a comprehensive inspection
of the vehicle’s condition to:
 Record the initial condition of the car, avoiding disputes after the service is completed.
 Identify existing issues such as scratches, dents, or system errors, and inform the
customer in advance.
 Minimize disputes when customers believe the vehicle was damaged by the technician.
 Ensure that the car care process is performed correctly, safely, and professionally.

When working with chemicals that contain cleaning agents, students are required to wear
Nitrile rubber gloves to protect their skin from the effects of these chemicals. The Nitrile

reducing the risk of skin irritation or direct exposure to harmful substances.

3. 3M STAINLESS STEEL CLEANER & POLISH


This solution has a very fast penetration rate, allowing it to remove rust quickly. It helps the surface
being cleaned become shiny without any traces of rust or dirt remaining.
3M Stainless Steel Cleaner & Polish is a specialized cleaning solution designed for stainless steel,
chrome, aluminum, and other metal surfaces. It helps remove fingerprints, grease, smudges, and
light stains while leaving a polished, streak-free finish.
Students, please explain how to use this solution:
Step 1: Shake the can well before use.
Step 2: Ensure the surface is free of heavy dirt or debris (wipe off dust if necessary).
Step 3: Hold the can 6 to 12 inches (15-30 cm) away from the surface.
Step 4: Spray a light, even coating directly onto the stainless steel or onto a clean microfiber cloth.
Step 5: Allow the cleaner to sit for a few seconds.

the vehicle, use a clean, soft microfiber towel. This practice helps prevent water spots and ensures a
streak-free finish.

Step 6: Clean the Inside of the Hood


Purpose: Clean dust, grease, and debris from the insulation pad and underside of the hood.
⬛✓ Avoid using hard brushes to scrub, as it may damage the insulation pad.
⬛✓ Use a soft cloth with a specialized cleaning solution.
Step 7: Clean the Engine Compartment
Purpose: Remove grease, dirt, and contaminants from the engine bay.
✓⬛ Use a specialized engine degreaser solution (Engine Degreaser).
⬛✓ Use a soft brush, detailing brush, or sponge to clean areas with heavy grease buildup.
⬛✓ Note: Do not spray high-pressure water directly onto electrical components.
Step 8: Dry the Engine Compartment
Purpose: Ensure the engine compartment is dry before restarting the engine.

Step 9: Apply Engine Dressing / Rodent Repellent (If Needed)
Purpose: Protect plastic and rubber components in the engine bay, preventing cracking and
unpleasant odors.
⬛✓ Use an engine dressing solution (Engine Dressing) to protect plastic and rubber parts.
⬛✓ Spray rodent repellent (Rodent Repellent) if necessary to protect wires and cables
from rodent damage.
Step 10: Run the Engine for 15 – 20 Minutes to Ensure the Engine Bay Is Completely Dry

Purpose: Ensure the engine runs normally and the engine bay is completely dry.

⬛✓ Start the engine and let it run idle for 15 – 20 minutes to dry the engine compartment
thoroughly.

Step 11: Overall Inspection & Handover to Customer

Tip: The overall inspection steps will be taught in Experiment 3. The periodic maintenance
checklist shown in Figure 18 will be used to conduct maintenance on the car’s systems.

Lesson 2: Car detailing

Purpose: Ensure that the engine compartment is clean, dry, and operating normally before
handing over the vehicle.

✓⬛ Check all components that were cleaned to ensure there is no remaining water or
cleaning solution.

✓⬛ Allow the customer to inspect, explain the steps that have been performed, and hand
over the vehicle.

2.5 Inspection and Evaluation

Students will practice in groups, recording a video to describe the process of exterior care,
interior care, and engine compartment maintenance.
1. Form groups & assign tasks:
Each group consists of 5 - 7 students, with the following roles:
o Main practitioner: Directly performs the car care steps.
o Videographer: Records the entire process on video.
o Narrator: Explains the steps performed in the video.
o Report compiler: Writes the report on the results.
2. Recording the practice video:
o The video should have clear visuals, good sound quality, and follow the correct sequence
of actions.
o The video content should include:
1. Exterior care: Washing the car, polishing the paint, cleaning the windows, conditioning
the tires, etc.
2. Interior care: Vacuuming, cleaning the seats, dashboard, doors, deodorizing, etc.
3. Engine compartment care: Cleaning, protecting, and applying dressing to the engine
bay, etc.
o During the process, students must clearly describe each step according to the procedure
they have learned.
Note: Each group should follow the instructions carefully and stay focused to achieve the best
results!
