Lab Manual Guide_sample Lab Manuals (1)
Lab Manual Guide_sample Lab Manuals (1)
Lab manuals must be written in an A4 size exercise book (Please start an empty exercise book
in the first laboratory practice.)
Write your name and major on the front cover.
The lab manual must be written by hand using a pen. Erasing is not allowed!
Start the lab manual of each session to a new page, indicating it with an obvious title (e.g.
Practice 1: Introduction to the laboratory work, basic laboratory operations) – the Weekly
schedule will guide you to find the topics and experiments for each lab session.
A single laboratory session will consist of several topics and experiments. The description of each and
all experiment should contain the following sections in the given order.
1. INTRODUCTION:
This part should contain the summary of the theoretical background of the experiment, and
the laboratory operation that you will perform. You can use the uploaded supplementary
materials, videos or your background knowledge to write this part.
2. DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE EXPERIMENT:
This section is a copy of the description / recipe (steps with the given amounts, volumes etc.)
of the current experiment from the DESCRIPTION OF THE EXPERIMENTS document.
3. SAFETY RULES:
Please list all the safety rules related to those chemicals you will work with and the laboratory
operations you will apply during the experiment.
These are the 3 parts that you should prepare (at home) prior to the laboratory practice and
these will be reviewed by the instructors during the short test.
The remaining sections should be written during the lab practice, after completing the
experiments.
4. OBSERVATIONS, CALCULATIONS:
In this section, please write down all your observations in details (e.g. color changes, gas
formation, precipitation). If a chemical reaction takes place, you have to give the
corresponding balanced chemical equation(s). If any calculations are needed during the work,
you have to give all the steps of your calculations. Pay special attention to using the correct
units with the correct precision. If necessary, prepare graphs. You can also draw the laboratory
apparatus you used and name its parts.
5. EXPLANATIONS, DISCUSSION:
In this section please write down the detailed explanation of your observations. Not only
summarize your work, but write down what happened during the experiment and what is the
reason for that.
On the next pages you can see some sample lab manuals. Please, do not copy
these documents, they only serve as examples of nice and well-kept lab manuals,
and they help you how to build the structure of each lab manuals.
