9. Highlight THREE modes of heat transfer. (3 Marks)

10. define the following terms as applied in linear motion. (3 Marks)

i. displacement

ii. velocity

iii. acceleration

11. List FOUR types of clearances in a motor vehicle. (4 Marks

SECTION B (60 MARKS)

ANSWER ANY THREE QUESTIONS IN THIS SECTION.

14.

a) A hoist exerts a force of 700 N in raising a load through a height of 25 m. The efficiency of
the hoist gear is 75% and the efficiency of the motor is 80 Calculate the input energy to the hoist.

(6 Marks)
b) A lorry having a mass of 2.5 tonnes is travelling a long a level road at 72km/h. When the
brakes are applied, the speed decreases to 18 km/h. determine how much the kinetic energy of
the lorry is reduced. (8 Marks)

c) A pulley system consists of two blocks, each containing three pulleys and connected as show
in the figure 1 below. An effort of 300 N is required to raise a load of 1,200 N. Determine:

i. The force ratio;

ii. The movement ratio;

iii. The efficiency of the pulley system. (6 Marks)

15.

a) Explain the following terms as applied in heat flow:

i. specific latent heat of fusion;

ii. specific latent heat of vaporisation. (4 Marks)

b) Determine the heat energy required to convert completely 10 kg of water at 50℃ into steam at
100℃ given that:
I. specific heat capacity of water is 4,200J/kg℃

II. specific latent heat of vaporisation of water is 2,260kJ/kg (6 Marks)

c) Steam initially at a temperature of 130℃ is cooled to a temperature of 20 ℃ below the

freezing point of water, the loss of heat energy being at constant rate. Sketch and explain a
temperature /time graph representing this change (10 Marks)

16.

a) Five coplanar forces are acting on a body and the body is in equilibrium. The forces are:

- 12 kN acting horizontally to the right,

- 18 kN acting at an angle of 75°,

- 7 kN acting at an angle of 165°,

- 16 kN acting from the nose of the 7 kN force, and

- 15 kN acting from the nose of the 16 kN force

Determine the directions of the 16 kN and 15 kN forces relative to the 12 Kn force. (12 Marks)

b) A trailer chassis, 5.4 m long consists of two side members and a number of cross members.
Each side member can be considered as a beam, simply supported at two points A and B, 3.6 m
apart, A being positioned 0.9 m from the front end of the frame and subjected to the following
concentrated loads:

- engine support (front) 2 kN

- engine Support (rear) 2.5 kN,

- gearbox support 0.5 kN, and

- body W kN.

The distances of these loads from the front end of the frame are 8.5 m, 0.6 m,1.8 m, and 3 m
respectively. If the reaction at A is 8.5kN. Determine:

i. The magnitude of the load W due to the trailer body:

ii. The magnitude of the support reaction at B. (8 Marks)

17.

per minute in 15 seconds. Determine the angular acceleration. (8 Marks)

c) A vessel has a volume of 0.8 m3 and contains a mixture of helium and hydrogen at a pressure
of 450 kpa and a temperature off 17℃. If the mass of helium present is 0.40 kg, determine:

i. The partial pressure of each gas and

ii. The mass of hydrogen present. Assume the characteristic gas constant for

helium to be 2,080 J/KgK and for hydrogen 4,160J/ kgK. (10 Marks)
