BSED-ENGLISH 3
TECHNICAL WRITING
Classification Assignment:
1. In your own words, explain what “Classification Writing” is. Why is it important
to have a clear “basis” when grouping things into categories? Give one simple
example of classification from your daily life (e.g., types of shoes, kinds of
friends, categories of school subjects).
An example from my daily life is classifying types of beverages. Using the basis
of “temperature,” I can group them into hot beverages (e.g., coffee, tea) and
cold beverages (e.g., soda, iced tea). This makes it easier to understand and
compare their properties.
2. Based on the lesson, what are the three main parts of classification writing?
Briefly explain each one and create a simple example using this pattern.
Genus: This is the broad category or group that includes items with common
characteristics. For example, “Vehicles” can be a genus.
Basis: This is the specific criterion or principle used to divide the genus into
smaller groups. For instance, using “mode of transportation” as the basis for
classifying vehicles.
Species: These are the subcategories or specific types within the genus, defined
by the basis. For example, under the genus “Vehicles” and the basis “mode of
transportation,” the species could be land vehicles (e.g., cars, bicycles), water
vehicles (e.g., boats, ships), and air vehicles (e.g., airplanes, helicopters).
Other example: Genus: Fruits, Basis: Color, Species: Red fruits (e.g., apples,
strawberries), yellow fruits (e.g., bananas, pineapples), and green fruits (e.g.,
kiwis, grapes).
