Professional Communication & CodePath Expectations

Part of your journey to becoming a professional in tech is building and maintaining your
professional reputation. As you engage in CodePath Career Center events and communicate with
potential employers, it’s important to represent yourself professionally.

Professional Communication Guidelines

Most employers are now connecting and communicating primarily online. Whether formally job
searching or expanding your professional network, professional communication is a vital career
management skill. When communicating with professionals in the tech industry, in both CodePath
sponsored events and your own networking building, below are some tips to make it successful.

Professional Communication Pro-Tips:

● Always include a greeting: Before any request, use a formal greeting include the person’s
first name or formal title (when addressing a Doctor, Professor or tilted profession)
● Frame the conversation: In the first few sentences, politely share context for your outreach
(connection to a colleague, alumni connection, requesting more information) . This helps
the reader understand what you’re looking for quickly.
● Represent yourself well: Little things go a long way in setting you apart from other students
including a professional subject line in emails, having a signature line set up, thanking the
person for their time, sharing the why of your message, etc.
● Build connection: Don’t go into a message just with an ask, provide a little bit of
background on yourself and share any common connections you have with the person
you’re reaching out to. You never know what connections you share until you ask.

CodePath-Sponsored Event Policy

The attendance policy applies to the following events:

● Coaching Sessions
● Matched 1:1 sessions (mentorship, 1:1 feedback events)
● Virtual Career Fair sessions
● Internship Connection Program sessions

By registering for the event and indicating your intent to participate, you are agreeing to show up
to your scheduled session in a timely manner and communicate directly with your company
volunteer, rep, or coach if an emergency arises.

● Coaching sessions: Our career coaches' time is extremely in demand, and to ensure their
time is spent supporting our students, arrive on time to your coaching session. If you
no-show to a scheduled coaching session without professionally communicating in
advance or within 24 hours of your appointment, you may lose access to Career Center
services. You can reach out to your coach via email or Slack.
● Matched events with company representatives (1:1 feedback events, VCF sessions, ICP
sessions): If you’re unable to attend your scheduled meeting, you are to communicate
directly with your matched company volunteer or representative within 24 hours. If you
no-show to your scheduled meeting with no professional communication, you will be
indicating to us that you are self-selecting to attend future Career Center events and
programming.

Career Center Camera Policy

Your camera is required to be on for all virtual 1:1 sessions or events including Virtual Career Fair
(VCF), 1:1 feedback weeks, career coaching, Internship Connection Program (ICP) small group
sessions, and breakout room sessions during larger events. Having your camera supports
community building and indicates your engagement in the session. We understand things come
up, so try to only register for events that work for your schedule. Students who do not comply with
this policy will lose access to future Career Center events and fairs until a formal apology is sent.
