The Baseband Terminal Station (BTS) is a crucial component of mobile communication systems that connects mobile phones to the network by transmitting and receiving radio signals. It consists of several key components, including the Baseband Unit, RF Unit, and Antenna, and performs functions such as signal modulation and error correction. BTS units are installed at cell sites and communicate with Base Station Controllers to facilitate mobile connectivity within specific coverage areas.

Baseband Terminal Station (BTS) - Notes for Diploma Students

Definition:

A Baseband Terminal Station (BTS), also known as a Base Transceiver Station, is an essential part of a

mobile communication system. It connects mobile phones to the mobile network by transmitting and receiving

radio signals.

Location:

- Installed at mobile tower sites (cell sites)

- Works with antennas on the tower

- Connected to a Base Station Controller (BSC)

Main Components:

1. Baseband Unit - Processes and converts digital data to/from radio signals

2. RF Unit - Converts baseband signals to radio frequency signals

3. Power Amplifier - Amplifies signal strength before transmission

4. Duplexer - Allows simultaneous transmission and reception

5. Antenna - Sends and receives signals to/from mobile phones

Functions of BTS:

- Transmit Signals to mobile phones

- Receive Signals from mobile phones

- Modulation/Demodulation of signals

- Error Correction for signal clarity

Baseband Terminal Station (BTS) - Student Notes

- Communicate with BSC for network connection

Working Process:

1. Mobile phone sends signal to BTS

2. BTS processes the signal

3. BTS sends signal to BSC

4. BSC connects to another phone or the internet

Key Points:

- BTS is essential in every cellular system

- Without BTS, mobile phones can't connect to networks

- Each BTS covers a specific area called a cell

- Towers may have multiple BTS units

Real-Life Example:

- BTS cabinets are located at the base of cell towers

- Antennas mounted on towers transmit/receive signals

Practice Questions:

1. What is the main function of a BTS?

2. Name two components of BTS and describe their roles.

3. What does the antenna do in a BTS setup?

4. Describe the process when a mobile phone makes a call.
