The document presents two problems related to geotechnical engineering, specifically focusing on the falling head permeability test and flow under a hydraulic head. Problem 4 calculates the time required for a falling head test and the coefficient of permeability, resulting in a permeability of 1.335 x 10^-5 cm/sec and a test duration of approximately 51.93 minutes. Problem 5 determines the coefficient of permeability and seepage velocity for water flowing through a sandy specimen, yielding a permeability of 0.0199 cm/sec and a flow velocity of 0.0166 cm/sec.

Problem 4: In falling head permeability test, the initial head (t=0) is 40 cm. the head drops by 5
cm in 10 minutes. Calculate the time required to run the test for the final head to be 20 cm. if the
sample is 6cm in height and 50cm2 cross sectional area, Calculate the coefficient of permeability,
taking area of stand pipe 0.5cm2

Given:-Initial head h1= 40cm, head drops by 5 cm in 10 minute, Final head= h2=40–5= 35cm.
t = ? (For h1= 40cm,& h2= 20cm) L= 6cm, A=50cm2, k=?, a= 0.5cm2
For falling head permeability test

k= 2.303x 0.5x 6 log10(40/35)

50 x10 x60
k = 1.335 x 10-5 cm/ sec

t= 2.303 a L log10(h1/h2)
Ak

t= 2.303 x 0.5 x 6 log10(40/20)

50 x1.335 x 10-5

t =3115.82 sec = 51.93 min

Problem 5: Water is flowing under a constant hydraulic head of 5cm through a sandy specimen
50cm2 in cross sectional area and 6cm height. Calculate coefficient of permeability and the
velocity of flow, if during a test interval of 30 minutes 1.5 Kg of water passes through the test
specimen weight 513 gm. If the particle specific gravity is 2.67. What is the seepage velocity of
water during the test?

Given:- h= 5 cm, A= 50 cm2, L= 6cm, k=? , v = ?, t= 30 min = 30 x 60 = 1800 sec,

Q=1.5Kg=1.5 x 1000= 1500 ml= 1500 cm3 (1 Kg = 1000ml=1000 cm3& 1 ml =1 cm3)
Mass of specimen= Md= 513 gm, G=2.67
k=q L
A h
q= Q/t = 1500/ 1800 = 0.833 ml/Sec = 0.833 cm3/Sec
k = 0.833 x 6
50 x 5
k=0.0199 cm/sec
Velocity of flow= v = q /A = 0.833/ 50 =0.0166 cm/sec
Seepage Velocity vs = v/ n
