GRAMMAR RULES – Day 2: Verbs, Helping


Verbs, and Tenses
1. Verbs (Action Words)
Verbs are words that show action or a state of being.
Examples:
She runs.
They eat lunch
2. Helping Verbs (Auxiliary Verbs)
Helping verbs support the main verb to show tense, mood, or voice.
Common helping verbs: am, is, are, was, were, has, have, had, will, shall, do,
does, did.
Examples:
She is dancing.
They have finished the work.
3. Subject-Verb Agreement
A singular subject takes a singular verb; a plural subject takes a plural verb.
Examples:
A) He goes to school.
‘He’ (singular subject) takes ‘goes’ (singular verb)
B) They go to school.
‘They’ (plural subject) takes ‘go’ (plural verb)
4. Use of Am / Is / Are (Present tense forms of "to be")
• "Am" is used with "I".
• "Is" is used with he, she, it, or singular nouns.
• "Are" is used with you, we, they, or plural nouns.
Examples:
I am happy.
She is tired.
They are students.
5. Use of Was / Were (Past tense of "to be")
"Was" is used with I, he, she, it.
"Were" is used with you, we, they.
Examples:
He was late.
We were early.
6. Tenses – Simple Forms
a) Simple Present – Action happening now or regularly.
He walks to school.
b) Simple Past – Action completed in the past.
He walked to school.
c) Simple Future – Action that will happen.
He will walk to school.
7. Present Continuous Tense:
Shows what is happening right now.
Use: am/is/are + verb + ing
Examples:
I am reading.
They are playing.
8. Past Continuous Tense
Describes an action that was happening in the past.
Use: was/were + verb + ing
Examples:
He was sleeping.
We were studying.
9. Future Tense with Will
Use "will" to show a future action.
Examples:
She will come tomorrow.
I will write a letter.
10. Has / Have / Had
Has – for he, she, it, singular noun
Have – for I, you, we, they, plural noun
Had – for past tense (used with all subjects)
Examples:
He has a book.
I have a pen.
They had lunch.
11. Do / Does / Did (Helping Verbs in Questions and Negatives)
Use ‘does’ with he/she/it (present)
Use ‘do’ with I/you/we/they (present)
Use ‘did’ for past tense
Examples:
• She does not like tea.
• I do not play chess.
• He did not call.
12. Making Questions (Interrogative Form)
Swap the subject and helping verb
Examples:
• They are dancing. → Are they dancing?
• He has eaten. → Has he eaten?
13. Negative Sentences
Use do not/does not/did not to make negatives.
Examples:
• I do not like coffee.
• She does not sing.
He did not eat lunch.
14. Spotting and Correcting Verb Errors
Check that the verb matches the subject in number and tense.
Examples:
Incorrect: The boy are sleeping.
Correct: The boy is sleeping.
