Gettysburg Address

Step I: Battle of Gettysburg


Students will watch the clip on the Battle of Gettysburg and take notes
below:

Step II: Students will watch & read and answer the following questions:

Reading
the Gettysburg Address: Video
1. What is the purpose of the speech?
2. What is Lincoln referring to when he says, “..Four score and seven
years ago…”? Why would he reference that?
3. How does Lincoln see the Civil War?
4. In what ways does Lincoln challenge us, the reader?
5. Why is the address so short?

Step III: “Voices From the Dead.” Students will read the opinion letter that
was published in the newspaper after the Gettysburg Address and answer
the questions.

1. What is the purpose of the editorial?


2. Who do you think wrote it, Union or Confederate? Why?
3. Does your group agree or disagree with the editorial’s claim that
Lincoln sullied the ground by bringing politics to Gettysburg?
