SECTION A: DESIGN PROCESS, SKILLS, AND GRAPHIC COMMUNICATION

QUESTION 1: Read the scenario and complete the following activities: (30)

Recently your teachers have been experiencing problems with their Wi-Fi at school. A cell phone
company has advised the school to consider a faster network. Since 5G towers can operate on
less power, they can be made relatively small. This is important not only for aesthetics but also
saves space.

1 | BEDFORDVIEW PRIMARY SCHOOL - TECHNOLOGY PAGE TOTAL:

A 5G cell tower is basically just a small box, like you see in the image above that can be mounted
onto a lamppost. While this is a new development, some companies are burying antennas under
manhole covers to extend their mobile network through the streets. So, there is no need for towers
looming over us.
Scenario: You have been asked to design a 5G cell tower model for your school. The model will
be made in class over three lessons in pairs. You must ensure that the model is strong and sturdy
and is light weight so that it can be mounted onto a streetlamp. It must blend in with its
surroundings and it must be made from recyclable materials.

1.1.1 What is the problem in the scenario that needs solving?

QUESTION 5: Refer to the timeline below and answer the questions that follow. (12)

What is 5G?
5G is the 5th generation mobile network. It is a new global wireless standard after 1G, 2G, 3G, and
4G networks. 5G enables a new kind of network that is designed to connect virtually everyone and
everything together including machines, objects, and devices.
5G wireless technology is meant to deliver higher multi-Gbps( Gigabytes per second) peak data
speeds, ultra-low latency ( which can handle large volumes of data without delays), more reliability,
massive network capacity, increased availability, and a more uniform user experience to more
users.
