Verb Tense Practice

Directions: The passage below tells about something that is happening right now. It is written in
the present tense. Rewrite the passage on the back of this page. Change the verbs to the past
tense to show that this story happened yesterday.

Make sure your new passage makes sense – you won’t have to change every verb.

BIG DOG LOST

I wait for Tommy at the bus stop. He walks up with tears in his eyes.

“What’s the problem?” I ask him. I am not sure if I should pat him on the back or stay far back.

“My dog,” he says. “My dog is missing. Mom says I have to get on the bus. She will look for
Sport before she goes to work.” Tommy is crying now. He is crying hard and his whole body is
shaking. I pat him on the back. Two first graders are at the bus stop now and they are looking at
us.

“Are you talking about a big brown dog?” one of the little kids asks. She moves her hands to
show how big she means. “A big brown dog with a white spot on an ear?”

Tommy looks up. “Yes,” he says. “That sounds like Sport.” Tommy is smiling now.

“That dog is in our backyard right now,” the girl says. “My father thinks it belongs to someone
on our street. It looks lost.”

Tommy gets on the bus. The girl uses Tommy’s phone to call her father. It’s going to be a good
day after all.

EXTRA TIME? Try this: Write a paragraph telling how Tommy may have lost Sport in the first
place.

COUSIN TROUBLE

Danny wanted to enjoy his new school. He made knew friends on the bus the vary first day.

Number-Writing Practice

Directions: When you write a sentence, numbers one through nine should usually be written in
words. We see five cardinals in that tree. Higher numbers should be written as the number: I saw
13 robins in my backyard.
Any sentence that begins with a number, no matter how large, has that number written out in
words: Four hundred three tickets were handed out for the soccer game.
Read each sentence. Rewrite it using the number in its correct form.
