Engmath 111-Lesson 9

This lesson focuses on maxima-minima and related rates, teaching students how to apply differentiation rules to real-life problems. It includes several examples demonstrating the use of the Chain Rule for finding rates of change in various scenarios. The lesson concludes with assignments that challenge students to apply the concepts learned.

AND RELATED

LESSON 9

OBJECTIVES
At the end of the lesson, students should be able to:
• Use the rules in differentiation in solving real life
problems.
• Apply these rules in solving related rates.
REVIEW OF PREVIOUS LESSON
Finding Related Rates
You have seen how the Chain Rule can be used to find dy/dx
implicitly. Another important use of the Chain Rule is to find the
rates of change of two or more related variables that are changing
with respect to time.
EXAMPLE #1

A ladder 20 feet long is placed against a wall. The foot of the ladder
begins to slide away from the wall at the rate of 1 ft/sec. How fast is
the top of the ladder sliding down the wall when the foot of the
ladder is 12 feet from the wall?
EXAMPLE #2

At a certain instant, car A is 60 miles north of car B. A is traveling

south at a rate of 20 mi/h while B is traveling east at 30 mi/h. How
fast is the distance between them changing 1 hour later?
EXAMPLE #3

When there is only 6 m of rope remaining in pulling a boat 3.8

meters below the pier, the rope is being pulled at 0.9 m/s. How fast
the boat does approaches to the pier at this instant?
EXAMPLE #4

Water is being pumped into a conical tank at the rate of 100 ft3/min.
The height of the tank is 20 ft and its radius is 5 ft. How fast is the
water level rising when the water height is 10 ft?
EXAMPLE #5

Situation: A 13 m ladder is leaning against a house when its base

starts to slide away. By the time the base 12 m from the house, the
base is moving at the rate of 5 m/sec.
a. How fast is the top of the ladder sliding down the wall, m/s?

and ground changing, 2 /?

b. At what rate is the area of the triangle formed by the ladder, wall

c. At what rate is the angle between the ladder and the ground
changing, rad/sec?
MAXIMA-MINIMA
STEPS:
• Know what is being asked (minimized or maximized)
• Express the quantity to be maximized or minimized in terms
of a single variable.
• Differentiate the function to be determined in step 2 and set
the derivative equal to zero.
• Solve for values of the variable and determine by inspection
or otherwise whether they maximize or minimize the given
quantity.
EXAMPLE #6
An architect is allowed no more than 15 square meters to add a
small bedroom to a house. Because of the room’s design in
relationship to the existing structure, the width of its rectangular
floor must be 7 meters less than two times the length. Find the
precise length and width of the rectangular floor of maximum area
that the architect has permitted.
EXAMPLE #7
An open top box with a square bottom and rectangular sides is to
have a volume of 864 cu. inches. Find the dimensions that require
the minimum amount of material.
EXAMPLE #8
A rectangular field bounded on one side by a building is to be
fenced the other three sides. If 980 m of fence is to be used, find the
dimensions of the largest field that can be fenced.
ASSIGNMENT
1. A spherical snowball is melting in such a way that its surface area
decreases at the rate of 1 in2/min.
(a) How fast is its radius shrinking when it is 3 in?
(b) How fast is its volume shrinking when its radius is 3 in?

2. Two legs of a right triangle are each 70 cm. If one leg grows at the
rate of 5 cm/min and the other shrinks at the rate of 5 cm/min,
(a) How fast is the hypotenuse of the triangle changing 2 minutes
later?
(b) How fast is the area of the triangle changing 2 minutes later?
