Management
Scope: WBS
WBS Provides input to:
The Requirements Traceability Matrix;
The Project Schedule;
The Project Budget;
The required Resources;
The Quality Assurance Plan;
Risk Assessment & Contingency Planning;
The Software Configuration Management Plan;
The Configuration Control Index.

Scope: WBS
Preparation of the WBS:
Break the Project down into Subsystems;
Break Subsystems down into Components;
Break Components down into Tasks (Work
Packages);
Estimate Work Packages:
Costs, Start date, End date, Job Responsibilities, Other
Resources, Risks;
Allocate Work Packages to appropriate people.

Scope: WBS
Work Package is a deliverable at the
lowest level of the WBS:
It is a defined element of work;
It is a series of activities;
It’s result is a deliverable or major component of a
deliverable including documentation;
It assigns responsibility;
It schedules start & finish;
It contains the budget for this set of activities.

Scope: Outputs
Scope Management outputs:
The Scope Statement provides a basis for making all future
project decisions and includes:
Project Justification;
Major Project Deliverables;
Critical Success factors & objectives;
Assumptions addressing the technical environment;
Constraints limiting the options available;
Quality measures for the Project;
Risk Management Plan for the project;
Configuration Management Plan for all Project’s products,
reviews, audits.

Scope: Summary
Bounds the Project by defining what’s in & what’s out;
Project Mandate defines the initial Scope Statement;
Project Objectives provide input to the Scope Statement;
Main processing functions to be incorporated provide
input to the Scope Statement;
Effective Change Management handles all change to the
Scope of the Project, by prioritizing changes, keeping a
track of all changes and updating the schedule;
Reviews and Audits ensure full delivery of Scope

Scope Planning
Scope Planning Tools and Techniques:
Expert Judgment
Templates, forms, standards
Scope Planning Outputs:
Scope Management Plan – how project scope is
managed, change control procedure, expected
stability, change identification and classification
Control what is/is not in the project; prevents delivering
“extra” benefits to the customer that were not
specified/required

Scope Definition
Define Scope – is the process of developing description
of the project and product.
The preparation of a detailed project scope statement is
critical to the project success and builds upon the major
deliverables.

Create WBS
Create WBS – is the process of subdividing project
deliverables and project work into smaller, more
manageable components.
WBS is a deliverable-oriented hierarchical
decomposition of the work to be executed by the project
team.

WBS Benefits
Prevent work slippage
Project team understands how their tasks fit into the overall project
and their impact upon the project
Facilitates communication and cooperation between project team
and stakeholders
Helps prevent changes
Focuses team experience into what needs to be done – results in
higher quality
Basis and proof for estimating staff, cost and time
Gets team buy-in, role identification
Graphical picture of the project hierarchy
Identifies all tasks, project foundation
