Parts of the Plant and

Their Functions
Parts of the Plant and
LESSON 1
Their Functions

At the end of this lesson, you are expected to:

Identify the basic parts of a plant

Describe the function of each plant part

Appreciate the importance of plants in daily life

Let us know!

Introduction

Plants are living things that grow and change over time. They have different parts, each with
its own special job to help the plant live and grow. Understanding these parts helps us know
how plants survive and why they are important to us.

Key Concepts:

Roots: Hold the plant in place and absorb water and nutrients.
Stem: Supports the plant and carries water and nutrients to other parts.
Leaves: Help the plant make food using sunlight (photosynthesis).
Flowers: Help plants make seeds and attract pollinators.
Fruits: Protect seeds and help in their dispersal.

LESSON OVERVIEW!

Plants are all around us! They provide us with food, air, shade, and beauty. But do you
know that plants have different parts that help them grow? Today, we will learn about
these parts and their jobs!

1. Roots – Roots are found

under the ground. They act like
straws, sucking up water and
nutrients from the soil. Roots also
keep the plant steady so it doesn’t
fall over. Some roots store food,
like carrots and radishes.
2. Stem – The stem is like a
plant’s backbone. It helps the
plant stand up tall and strong. It
also acts like a pipeline, moving
water and nutrients from the roots
to the rest of the plant. Think of a
tree trunk – that is a very strong
stem!
3. Leaves – Leaves are like tiny
kitchens for the plant. They catch
sunlight and use it to make food.
This process is called
photosynthesis. Leaves also take
in air and release oxygen, which helps us breathe. Mango and banana leaves
are big to catch more sunlight.
4. Flowers – Flowers are the colorful, beautiful parts of a plant. They attract
pollinators like bees and butterflies, which help the plant make seeds. These
seeds can grow into new plants. Sunflowers and roses have bright flowers to
attract insects.
5. Fruits – Fruits grow from flowers and protect the seeds inside. When a fruit falls
to the ground, the seeds inside can grow into a new plant. Apples, mangoes,
and watermelons all have seeds inside them.
Why Are Plant Parts Important?
Plants are essential for life on Earth. Their parts work together to:
• Provide food for humans and animals.
• Release oxygen for us to breathe.
• Offer shelter for many animals.
• Prevent soil erosion and help maintain a balanced ecosystem.

POST TEST - Let’s Evaluate!

Let’s Examine!

1. Why do plants need roots?

2. What happens if a plant has no leaves?

3. How do flowers help plants grow new plants?

Let’s Enrich!

Activity: Create a Plant Parts Poster

Instructions:
• Draw a plant with its different parts.
• Label each part (roots, stem, leaves, flowers, fruits).
• Color the drawing.
• Show your work to the class and explain one function of each part.
