SEMESTER II, SESSION 2013/2014
COURSE CODE : SAB 4163

COURSE : CONCRETE TECHNOLOGY

PROGRAMME : SAW

DURATION : 2 HOURS 30 MINUTES

DATE : JUNE, 2014

INSTRUCTION TO CANDIDATES:
1. ANSWER ALL FOUR (4) QUESTIONS.
2. ANSWER SECTION (A) AND (B) IN A SEPARATE BOOKLET.

disciplinary actions and the faculty may recommend the student to be expelled from
the study.

This examination question consists of (9) printed pages only.

SAB 4163 2

SECTION A

Q1. (a) Define rheology of concrete. Describe the factors affecting rheological
properties of concrete.
(7 marks)

(b) What is meant by carbonation shrinkage? Discuss the important

factors influencing creep of concrete.
(8 marks)

(c) Fly ash, slag, silica fume etc. are commonly used in concrete as
supplementary cementing materials. List two more varieties of
pozzolanic materials vastly available in Malaysia and specify their
potential benefits in concrete.
(10 marks)
(25 marks)

Q2. (a) Outline the mechanism of action of plasticizers in concrete. Name two
categories of super plasticizing admixture based on chemical
composition.
(7 marks)

(b) How many ways concrete can be vibrated? Explain the advantages
and disadvanages of revibration of concrete.
(8 marks)

(c) What do you understand by the 'fire-rating' of concrete? Briefly

illustrate the thermo-mechanical properties of concrete at high
temperature.
(10 marks)
(25 marks)
SAB 4163 3

SECTION B

Q3. (a) Explain what is meant by ‘durability’ of concrete. Identify four (4)
major types of reinforced concrete deterioration due to durability
problem.
(6 marks)

(b) What is alkali-aggregate reaction (AAR) and what are the factors
promoting alkali-aggregate reaction in concrete? With justification
explain one effective method of controlling AAR.
(9 marks)

(c) Discuss in details the general procedures of planning and testing of

damaged reinforced concrete structures.
(10 marks)
(25 marks)

Q4. A multi storey building has been proposed to be built near a seaside. The
building will be based on reinforced concrete structure with the fcu = 50MPa.
An ordinary Portland cement and uncrushed aggregates have been selected to
be used in this construction.

(a) Following the DOE Method, design a concrete mix suitable for the
foundation of the structure and explain on any decision made on the
requirements selected in designing the concrete mix. What is the
cement content and water cement ratio of the concrete mix?

(b) If 30% mineral admixture (pfa) is added to the mix. What is the new
cement content and water cement ratio of the concrete mix?
(25 marks)

Note:
Use 450kg/m3 and 300kg/m3 as the maximum and minimum cement contents
respectively.
Aggregate density = 2.6
Free water content = 2/3Wf + 1/3 Wc

Portland cement content =

. .

Pfa content = pC/(100-p)
