SAB 4163 2

SECTION A: ANSWER ALL QUESTIONS FROM THIS SECTION.

Q1. (a) A reinforced concrete structure was designed in accordance to the

design procedure of Eurocode 2. As a consultant you are required to
design the concrete mix with characteristic strength of 40MPa
following the DOE Method using the mix design requirements as
follows:
i) Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) is specified.
ii) Granite of 10 mm maximum size aggregate and sand with 60%
passing 600µm sieve are specified.
iii) Proportion of 30% pulverized fuel ash is specified.
iv) A mix with medium workability is required.
v) Maximum free w/c of 0.45 is specified.
vi) Minimum cement content of 340 kg/m3 is specified.
(17 marks)

(b) Suggest the principle of producing a high strength concrete based on

the above mix design.
(8 marks)

Q2. (a) What are the criteria of good repair materials for concrete. A structure
suffers from corrosion of reinforcement. List down step by step on
how to repair them.
(10 marks)

(b) List different type of fibres used in concrete. Select one of them and
explain its effect on the properties of fresh and hardened concrete and
its possible applications.
(10 marks)

(c) List several types of pozzolanic materials successfully used in concrete

construction.

SECTION B: ANSWER ALL QUESTIONS FROM THIS SECTION.

Q3. (a) Based on Figure Q3(a), explain the differences between flow
behaviour of concrete compared to fluid, (draw the fluid curve if
necessary). What are the factors that being considered in the Bingham
model of fresh concrete compared to normal assumption?

FIGURE Q3(a): Bingham model of fluid behaviour

(15 marks)

(b) There are many abandoned projects in Malaysia. Some are left
abandoned for more than five years. Based on Figure Q3(b), explain in
the consequences if the reinforced concrete structure is left abandoned
and exposed to the environment.
(10 marks)

Q4. (a) Concrete components are not combustible materials. However, time
and again we heard reinforced concrete structures burnt down by fire.
Explain on how fire (high temperature) affect reinforced concrete
structure. Suggest two measures that can delay (improve) concrete
damage due to fire.
(9 marks)

(b) Use of Self Compacted Concrete (SCC) is getting popular lately. With
example describe one (1) application of SCC in modern concrete
construction and state the requirements for pumpable concrete.
(9 marks)

(c) Discuss with example three types of crack in concrete.
