hearing aid
Unlike conventional hearing aids, a bone conduction hearing aid is fixed behind the ear of
the patient. It collects sound and converts the sound to vibrations. Then, the vibrations are
transmitted directly through the skull to the inner ear.
a Describe how a person without hearing loss hear when sound enter the ear canal.

FINAL EXAM
ANSWERS

time (s)
5 a The sound hits the eardrum and causes the eardrum to vibrate. (1m)
The ear bones amplify the vibrations of the eardrum. (1m)
The vibrations from the ear bones stimulate the sensory cells in the cochlea. The cells then send out
messages. (1m)
The messages are sent along the auditory nerve to the brain for interpretation. (1m)
b ONE similarity:
Sensory cells in the cochlea are needed for detecting vibrations in both types of hearing aids. (1m)
ONE difference:
For conventional hearing aids, the vibrations detected by the sensory cells are produced by the
eardrum. For bone conduction hearing aid, such vibrations are produced by the hearing aids. (1m)
