MCM 307: Editorial Writing
Assignment
As an editorial writer, pick up on the media rift between ex President
Obasanjo and President Tinubu media team.

Answer
The press feud between former President Olusegun Obasanjo and the media
group of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu basically reflects tension within the
political medium of Nigeria. Each of these has been made to work out in
open statements, underlining the long-standing corrosion between two of
Nigeria’s most powerful political figures.

The scene of the rift: A divide that has only widened after Obasanjo’s
latest research on the structure and leadership style adopted by him. Tinubu
had adopted much controversy. Recently, Obasanjo spoke of the ills that
have been witnessed in the governance failures, including confused fiscal
policies and approaches to leadership. These were followed by fast responses
from the media assistants of Tinubu, arguing that the interpretation which
was given by the former president was just absurd and tended to engage
that line that Obasanjo’s structure itself was crossed in controversies.

The struggle for inheritances: Each one of those should be considered a

fight between two different political bodies and legacies. Often, it is Obasanjo
fighting military or ordinary citizen president to present himself as a
significance or a symbol of Nigerian politics, while Tinubu’s media team does
everything possible to set his legacy as strong-headed, ready to take
unpopular decisions on sensitive economic issues like fuel subsidy removal
and monetary reforms.

Consequences for Public Discord: Besides the question of political

dispute, what makes this rift relevant in the public imagination is the role the
media would play in shaping political narratives in Nigeria. Curiously, there is
disagreement among commentators as to whether public disputes distract
attention from important public matters or allow unnecessary debate and
accountability.
Nigeria in the crossfire: The division between both power figure heads
perhaps summarizes further serious distance of the political clash from the
people for most Nigerians. Having had to struggle through a record of
economic instability, fragility, and social nervousness, the country views
such disagreements as diverting attention from governance and
development concerns.

The Next approach: This fracture between Obasanjo and the Tinubu media
group calls for some thoughtfulness and consideration. The two represent
strong founding fathers who ought to have been rallying points for the
country, instead of swords held against their own people. Through emphasis
on positive speeches and shared commitments can aid problem solving in
Nigeria. Still, it is governance and leadership responsible for projects that are
essentially put to a test in terms of delivery for the people.
