L-7 Motion and Measurement Notes and Worksheet

The document covers the concepts of measurement, including the definition of standard units and the importance of uniformity in measurements. It explains different types of motion such as rectilinear, circular, rotatory, and periodic motion, along with examples for each. Additionally, it includes practical exercises for converting measurements and understanding motion through fill-in-the-blanks, naming, and true or false questions.

Lesson-10 Motion and Measurement of Distances

1. What do you mean by the term measurement?

A. Measurement means comparison of an unknown quantity with some known fixed quantity. This known
fixed quantity is called a unit.
2. Why is a cubit or a footstep not used as a standard unit of length?

A. A cubit or a footstep cannot be used as a standard unit of length because their length is not same for all the
persons.

3. What do you mean by standard unit of measurement? Why is it necessary?

A. A unit of measurement which has a fixed value, and it does not change from person to person or place to
place, is called a standard unit of measurement. Standard units are used in measurement toavoid confusion
and to have uniformity. It also makes our measurement more reliable and accurate.

4. Mention the precautions you should take while measuring the length of a line segment with a scale?

A. a) Keep the scale exactly along the length of the line segment.
b) Avoid using the worn-out portions of a scale.
c) Keep the eyes exactly in front of the point where the measurement is to be taken.
5. Why shouldn't we use an elastic measuring tape to measure distance?
A We shouldn't use an elastic measuring tape to measure distance because it is not a standard device. Due to its
elasticity, it will show different measurement for the same unit of distance.
6. Define rest and motion
A Rest: The object which do not change its position with time, with respect to its surrounding is said to be at
rest.

Motion: The object which change its position with time, with respect to its surrounding is said to be at
motion.

7. What is rectilinear motion? Give two examples.

A The motion of an object along a straight line is called rectilinear motion.

Eg: Motion of a vehicle on a straight road, falling of a stone
8. What is circular motion? Give two examples.
A. The motion of an object along the circumference of a circle or along a circular path is called circular
motion.

Eg: Earth revolving around the sun, A toy car moving in a circular track.
9. What is rotatory motion? Give two examples.
A. The motion of an object about a fixed point or axis without changing its position is called rotatory motion.
Eg: A spinning top. A spinning wheel.
10. What is periodic motion? Give two examples.
A. The motion that repeats itself after regular intervals of time is called periodic motion. Eg: Motion of a
pendulum, Motion of a child on a swing.
11. Give two examples of an object executing more than one type of motion.
A.1.Motion of bicycle: When the bicycle is moving on a straight road, it has rectilinear motion. The wheels of
the bicycle are rotating about its axis, so it has rotational motion.
2.Moving ball: It is rotating as well as moving forward. So, it has two types of motions, rotational and
rectilinear motions.

12. The height of a person is 1.65m. Express it in cm and mm.

A. 1m=100cm
1.65m=1.65x100
=165cm
1m=1000mm

1.65m=1.65x1000

=1650mm

13. The distance between Radha's house and her school is 3250m. Express this distance in km.

A. 1km=1000m

3250m=3250/1000

=3.250km

NOTE: 1cm=10mm
1m=100cm
1m=1000mm
1km=1000m
