“Did you see that, Alex?” Sam exclaimed; his eyes wide with excitement.

“You’re a
natural!” Alex caught the basketball, dribbled it once, and launched it towards the hoop.
Swish! The ball sailed through the net. “You never miss, man!” Sam marveled. “Not
unless it’s a real game,” Alex grumbled. “Then I choke every time.”
Alex was a different player when he was having fun with Sam at school compared to
when he was playing for the school team in front of a crowd. “Maybe you just need more
practice,” Sam suggested. “But I practice all the time with you!” Alex protested. “I just
can’t perform under pressure. I always get confused and distracted.”
“You play great when I’m watching,” Sam pointed out. “That’s because I’ve known
you forever,” Alex replied, “I just get nervous around other people.” Sam nodded
understandingly, a mischievous glint in his eye.
The next day, Sam and Alex met on the court as usual. After a few minutes, Sam
excused himself. “Keep practicing,” he said. “I’ll be right back.” Sam dashed off,
rounding up a few students, a math teacher, and two office workers. When he explained
his plan, everyone was eager to help. He reminded them to be quiet as they headed
towards the court.
Alex was surprised to see the crowd. “Alex,” Sam said, “I just wanted to show you
that you can perform, even with people watching. Now, you’re ready for the next game!”
