Class 10 - Linear Equations in Two Variables

1. Basic Concept Questions

1. Solve the pair of linear equations: 2x + 3y = 12 and x - y = 1

2. Graphically solve: x + y = 5 and x - y = 1

3. Represent the equation x + 2y = 6 on a graph.

4. Find whether the following pair has unique, no, or infinite solutions: 3x + 2y = 6 and 6x + 4y = 12

2. Real-Life Word Problems (Most Expected Type)

1. The sum of the ages of a father and his son is 45 years. 5 years ago, the father's age was 4 times the

son's age. Find their ages.

2. The sum of two numbers is 60. One number is twice the other. Find the numbers.

3. A shopkeeper has Rs.5 and Rs.10 notes, total 30 in number. If the total value is Rs.220, find how many

notes of each type he has.

4. The perimeter of a rectangle is 60 cm. If the length is 3 cm more than twice the breadth, find its

dimensions.

3. Moderate to Tough (But In-Syllabus)

1. A two-digit number is such that the product of its digits is 24. When the digits are reversed, the number

becomes 36 more than the original. Find the number.

2. A person buys 5 pens and 3 notebooks for Rs.120. Another person buys 3 pens and 2 notebooks for

Rs.70. Find the cost of one pen and one notebook.

3. A bus covers 300 km at a certain speed. If the speed had been 10 km/h more, it would have taken 1 hour

less. Find the original speed of the bus.

Exam Tips

- Graph-based question will definitely appear - be prepared to plot accurately.

- One word problem requiring algebraic methods (substitution/elimination) is likely.

- Sometimes questions about nature of solutions (unique/no/infinite) also come.
