4) Addition and resolution of vectors in 3D; Equilibrium of a particle in 3D

The document discusses the importance of speaking out against injustice, referencing Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s quote on the silence of friends. It also covers the principles of 3D vector analysis, including definitions, addition, and equilibrium of vectors, along with various problems and activities for students to engage with. The content is structured to facilitate understanding of Cartesian vector representation and its applications in solving problems related to forces in three dimensions.

3D Problems are everywhere…

Cartesian vector analysis provides a convenient method for finding

both the resultant force and its components in three dimensions.
How do we write a vector in 3D?
We use the Cartesian vector form
The right-handed coordinate system
For right-handed coordinates the right
thumb points along the Z axis in the
positive direction and the curl of the
fingers represents a motion from the
first or X axis to the second or Y axis.
When viewed from the top or Z axis
the system is counter-clockwise.

If an x, y, z coordinate system is established, then the coordinates of two points

A and B on the cable can be determined. From this the position vector r acting
along the cable can be formulated. Its magnitude represents the distance from
A to B, and its unit vector, u = r>r, gives the direction defined by α, β, γ.
