4 Dell PowerProtect DD Series Appliances with Veeam Backup and Replication: Configuration Guide
Introduction

Introduction
This section provides a brief overview of DD series appliance and its integration with
Veeam Backup and Replication.

The DD series appliances deliver the most trusted platforms for protection storage. It also
ensures unparalleled data integrity, industry leading deduplication, scalability, reliability
and performance for smooth and reliable recovery, and a broad ecosystem of backup and
archive applications.

DD series appliance is an appliance that can be deployed physically or virtually. The

virtual appliance is called PowerProtect DD Virtual Edition (DD VE) which is a software-
defined data protection solution of PowerProtect DD. It maintains all the core
differentiating features of the DD series appliances. DDVE is fast and simple to download,
deploy, and configure. DD VE delivers increased transactional and operational
efficiencies, reliability, and it has a lower Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) by utilizing object
storage in addition to block storage. DD series appliances support multiple front-end
protocols such CIFS/NFS, DD VTL and its own DDboost protocol.

Veeam Backup and Replication is a data protection solution. It provides centralized

console for administering backups, restore, and replication operations. Veeam Backup
and Replication uses Data domain as protected storage for deduplication, reliable
backups, fast recovery, secure replication, and intelligent data re-use. It uses DD Boost
technology which offers some advanced features and benefits. Veeam Backup and
Replication supports following features:
• Advanced Load Balancing and Link Failover
• Distributed Segment Processing
• Virtual Synthetics
• In-flight Data Encryption
• Per storage Unit Streams

Dell PowerProtect DD Series Appliances with Veeam Backup and Replication: Configuration Guide 5
Reference Architecture

Additionally, Veeam Backup and Replication supports PowerProtect DD Storage Systems

working over following protocols
• TCP/IP Protocol
• Fiber Channel Protocols

Reference Architecture
Veeam Backup and Replication uses two Data Mover Services to communicate with DD
series appliance. These services are responsible for data processing and data transfer.
1. Veeam Data Mover on the backup proxy
2. Veeam Data Mover on the gateway server

The Veeam Data Mover services are not hosted on DD series appliance storage. So, the
gateway server is deployed to communicate with DD series appliance. A gateway server
is an auxiliary backup infrastructure component that connects the backup server and
backup repository.

When any job is run, it addresses the backup repository, data mover service on the
gateway server establishes a connection with the data mover service on the backup
proxy, enabling efficient data transfer over the network.

Note: For DD series appliance storage systems working over Fibre Channel, the gateway server
must be defined explicitly that communicates with DD series appliance.

The DD series appliances are presented to Veeam Backup and Replication software as a
DDBoost, CIFS, NFS or DD VTL storage target or depending on the media agent
platform. For CIFS/NFS, the first consideration to address is what level of CIFS or NFS
sharing is wanted for the DD series appliance storage.

6 Dell PowerProtect DD Series Appliances with Veeam Backup and Replication: Configuration Guide
Configuration

By default, the entire DD Series Appliance directory structure (\\datadomain\backup) can

be shared by CIFS/NFS/DDBoost to all or selected hosts. Alternatively, subfolders or an
MTree can be created for explicit sharing. The choice will depend on the specific use case
for the customer environment.

Configuration
This section provides an overview of how to configure Veeam Backup and Replication
server to integrate with PowerProtect DD series appliance. Configuring DD series
appliance as a backup target for Veeam Backup and Replication requires the following
steps:
1. Create CIFS shares, NFS exports, DDboost storage units and VTL libraries on DD
series appliance
2. Configure Backup infrastructure
3. Configure Veeam Backup and Replication with DD series appliance as backup
target
4. Create Backup Policies
5. Perform Backup and Restore process
Pre-requisites
1. A DD series appliance Series Appliance running DD OS version 6.1 or later with
DDBoost, DD VTL and Cloud Tier license
2. Veeam Backup and Replication software 10 or later with valid license
3. VMware vCenter server and ESXi hosts on which Veeam Backup and Replication
virtual machine is running.
4. Backup sources i.e. Windows file servers, Linux servers and NDMP servers
5. Required ports should be open between ESXi hosts and Veeam Backup and
Replication machine

Configure Veeam This section describes how to setup the backup infrastructure before performing data
Backup and protection and disaster recovery tasks with Veeam Backup and Replication. The backup
Replication for infrastructure may vary depending upon customer environment and strategies. A typical
Backup backup infrastructure consists of following components:
Infrastructure • Backup Server: the server on which Veeam Backup and Replication is installed
• Infrastructure Servers: virtual hosts used as sources and targets for backup,
replication and restore
• Backup Proxies: The backup proxy role is assigned to Veeam backups server and
act as Data Mover component
• Repositories: Locations where backups, replicas and VM copies are stored

how and where to replicate. One replication job can be used to process one or more
VMs.

2. Click HOME
3. Click Replication Job
4. Click Virtual Machine (or right click the Jobs > Replication > Virtual machine)

▪ Data Transfer: Choose how VM data should be transferred to the target site.
▪ Source Proxy: Choose backup proxy servers for this job. For redundancy, it is
recommended to select at least two proxies. If Automatic selection is selected,
the job will automatically select the most suitable backup proxy from all
available backup proxy servers
▪ Target Proxy: Similar to Source proxy
▪ Direct: Select this option for local and off-site replication over fast links
▪ Through built-in WAN accelerators: Select this option for off-site replication
over slow links
▪ Gust Processing: Choose guest OS processing options available for running
VMs
▪ Enable application-aware processing: Check this option which detects and
prepares applications for consistent backup, performs transaction logs, and
configures the OS to perform required application restore steps upon first boot
▪ Guest Interaction Proxy: Guest interaction proxies are used to offload guest
processing from the backup server, click select if there is any preferred proxy,
otherwise the most suitable proxy will be selected as an automatic selection
▪ Guest OS credentials: Choose from the list or add a new account
