DISRUPTIVE METHODOLOGY: GAMIFICATION

Top-level summary or Key points: Nowadays, students shouldn't just learn about
topics, the 21st century has created the need
to learn how to learn, how to think effectively
and independently, to face the world with
curiosity and look at it with a critical eye. With

Suggested methodologies Thinking-Based Learning (TBL) helps

students learn how to think clearly and
reflect deeply. It encourages them to
make decisions, give reasons, and
analyze situations. This approach
promotes creativity and critical thinking
by asking students to solve problems,
compare opinions, and question ideas.
It also includes metacognition, helping
them to be aware of how they learn
and how to improve.
Suggested activities Activity # 1 “Would You Rather?”

The teacher will show some slides,

asking the students Would You Rather
questions. Such as the following:

a) Would You Rather being

followed on Instagram by your
favorite artist or being
recognized by your favorite artist
as a loyal follower.
b) Would You Rather making a
blog or a YouTube Channel.
c) Would You Rather not have
electricity for an entire week or
not have water for an entire
week.
d) Would You Rather having Chat
GPT as your parent or only
being able to use Chat GPT to
communicate.

This activity has a lot to do with

Thinking-Based Learning because it
encourages the students to make a
rather complicated and subjective
choice and come up with ways to
defend it. Promoting imagination and
decision-making.

Activity # 2 “Talk about Impact”

The teacher is going to show them the

@impact account in Instagram that
posts about the most recent issues
going on in the world, from beauty to
politics. From there, each student will
choose a post that they found pretty
important and they will have to explain
why they did.

This activity was chosen because

teacher wanted to get social media
involved and relevant topics for our
society and encouraging the students
to think about why they find it
interesting and why it matters to them
or how it affects them.

Activity # 3 “Friendly Moral Dilemma”

For this activity the teacher will tell the

following story:

“ Patricia and Lucía were having lunch

that Lucía brought because Patricia
always forgets to bring lunch to eat.
So, Patricia decides that she will bring
lunch on Monday for the two of them,
so she tells Lucia not to bring any, and
that she will text her to confirm. Sunday
arrives and Lucía has not gotten a text
from Patricia about lunch on Monday
and was too ashamed to text her, it felt
like abusing the kind gesture, if she
didn't remember that was fine and she
was gonna bring her own lunch with
her. So she did, Monday arrived and
Patricia ended up coming late to class
because she woke up early to make
lunch for the two, even tho she had
forgotten to text Lucía to confirm. Lucía
brought her own lunch that she said
was going to eat and Patricia feels
weird about it, because, yes she forgot
to text, but Lucia could've texted too.
Lucia argued and they are left with a
heavy heart”

Who do you agree with? Patricia or

Lucía?

The teacher came up with this day to

day dilemma, easy to relate to, so the
students can analyze different points of
views, sympathize with others and
maybe understand something they
didn't understand before!

Activity # 4 “AI debate”

As we all know, the use of artificial

intelligence has increased a lot
recently. This has caused different
opinions, especially in schools. Some
people think it is good, but others don’t
think so. In this activity, students will
use their reasoning and critical thinking
skills to talk about this topic.

To do this, students will be divided into

two groups. One group will be in favor
of using artificial intelligence in the
classroom, and the other group will be
against it. Both groups must take the
given perspective when they answer
the questions.

1. Should the use of AI be

allowed in the classroom?

2. How much does the use of AI

affect students’ independence
and critical thinking?

3. Should the teacher teach

students how to use AI correctly,
or should it be banned in the
classroom and for schoolwork?

Activity # 5 "Closing: Metacognition"

To wrap up the module, the students

will be asked to answer some self-
assessment questions, to analyze their
strengths, weaknesses, ways of
improvement and remind themselves
of their hardwork.

All mentioned above will be made

answering the questions below:

a) Which activity were you the best at?

Why? What did you do?

b) In which activity do you believe there

is room for improvement? What do you
think happened?

c) What do you think can be improved

and how?

d) Write an encouragement letter to

yourself, highlighting your strengths
and hardworking, reminding yourself to
be kind and understanding.
