AIM: Design a roof Top grid-connected Solar PV system for your home.
The design should be practical, cost-effectivve, and based on actual site
parameters.
3. Shading Consideration
Shading was a key parameter during the site analysis phase. The following
potential sources of shading were identified:
Water tanks and plumbing structures on the rooftop
Nearby trees (especially coconut trees and mango trees)
Surrounding buildings within 10–15 meters
To mitigate the impact of shading:
The solar panels were placed away from known shaded regions.
Design incorporated flush mount orientation to minimize elevation.
Monthly Shading Simulation was not performed digitally, but field
observation suggestedthat between 10:00 AM and 3:00 PM, most of the
rooftop receives unobstructed sunlight
4. Solar Irradiation at Your Location
The selected weather dataset was from TMY, Trivandrum, ISHRAE (epw).
Based on this data:
- Average Global Horizontal Irradiation (GHI): approximately 5.2
kWh/m²/day
- Annual Irradiation: around 1898 kWh/m²/year
These values are consistent with solar irradiation maps from MNRE and
NASA's Surface Meteorology database.
7. Cost Estimation
Estimated Cost

8. Payback Period Calculation
Local Electricity Tariff: INR 6.50 per kWh
Expected Annual Energy Generation: Approximately 5,500 kWh/year
Annual Savings: 5,500 kWh x INR 6.50 = INR 35,750/year
