Introduction with the various Innovative Construction Materials
I am the youngest sibling in the family (two sisters and one brother). I can proudly say that I am
the only professional engineer in the family. Apart from being an engineer, I also have been a
teacher which have helped me to increase my communication skills along with my technical
skills. I look forward to enhance my ideas in modern eco-friendly buildings with advanced
sustainable technological methods.

Hiring Manager
Industrus Engineering
Sydney, NSW
23 August 2020
I am writing this application in order to express my interest to work for Industrus as a graduate
Civil Engineer. I am currently in my final year of Masters of Professional Engineering in Civil
Engineering in University of Technology Sydney. I am seeing this as a great opportunity to
enhance my skills in the field of practical engineering. As a knowledgeable and motivated
individual with relevant experiences in the construction industry, I am seeking for further
learning experiences from your company.
I have a major interest in infrastructure and design where I am keen to learn and contribute my
ideas towards building environmentally sustainable structures. I consider myself to work as a
good team player and I able to meet deadlines even under extreme conditions. During my
internship in Oriental Real Estate Limited, I have gained a lot of learning experiences including
innovation techniques used in construction materials, construction report preparations,
construction procedures and most importantly site supervision.
Besides working experience my study has helped me to learn about ethical aspects,
stakeholder’s demands, project and time management. Activities in my work and study has
helped me to understand the necessity of professional engineering where standards have to be
maintained. I am also aware of the hazards and dangers associated with these kind of jobs and
know where correct precautions have to be taken.
Decision making is also an important aspect in practical situation. I was assigned in a project
where during my internship where the main objective was to reduce the destruction by
flooding. After carefully reviewing the conditions of the environment and resources two
propositions were considered – one was to increase the level of the dam at that area and the
other included raising the houses. The second option required the local council to invest nearly
double the cost compared to the first option. The problem is that the first option would have
hamper the wildlife located near the construction area. Hence, the second option was chosen
despite the cost because sustainability is a key element during any kind of construction process.
This experience has helped me to understand the importance of sustainability.
I would also like to add that I have excellent communication skills as I also have been a teacher
beside being an engineer. Being involved as a Duke of Edinburgh, Award Leader, I have helped
students in their extra curriculum activities such as coaching them in football, cricket and chess.
I also occasionally lead study tour trips with other peers and trained on an average of 50 to 100
students per class.
I am enclosing my resume along with this cover letter where hopefully you will find that I
matched your requirements precisely. I hope to get a response from you soon. For any further
enquiries or questions please contact me at [email protected] or

Applying Principles of Sustainability to Create Viable Systems
According to Brundtland Report for the World Commission on Environment and Development,
1987, Sustainability is “… development that meets the needs of the present without
compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs ...” [1]. It is very
important that sustainability is integrated in the field of engineering. This helps to save
resources for future purposes.
One such situation arose when I was assigned for a project during my internship. The purpose
of the job was to mitigate the flood level in an area. The resources and the environment around
the construction area was carefully monitored and after carefully considering all possible
courses of action two proposals were considered. Raising the level of the dam by altering the
properties of the corresponding creek lying within the flooding zone being the first option. The
second option was to increase the level of the house in the proposed area of flooding. The first
option was cheaper compared to the second option – which may cost twice the amount by the
local council body. The problem with the first option was that it endangers the natural
habitants as a wildlife was very close to the construction area. As engineers, we chose to go
with the first option despite it being more expensive. This is because it was more sustainable.
The cost was higher but still it was justifiable for the betterment of the environment.
This was a major step and helped me to get familiar with the concept of sustainability. Being a
student of University of Technology Sydney (UTS), I was always made aware of using resources
in a sustainable manner so that the future can use them as well. Although, the decision was
somewhat risky and it may also have decreased our chances of losing the project, the most
viable option was proposed. Being a part of that team I got to learn the whole process of
justifications, processes and planning in order to make such courageous decisions by following
standards and evaluations.
My idea of practicing real life engineering changed along with this experience. Numerous
principles and standards are settled to instruct engineers in manufacturing products that will
bring profits within limited constraints. [2] A professional engineer has to face lots of critical
situations and he has to decide the most sustainable option by taking into account design
criteria and considering all possible outcomes in decision making. [3]
There will always be certain expectations from stakeholders which an engineer must take into
account. Code of conducts, ethical aspects, standards and policies all must be taken into
account while meeting the demands of the stakeholders. The job may seem complicated but if
proper rules and regulations are maintained then any decision making process will become
easier.

Professional Practice within intercultural and global contexts
Bangladesh is a country where safety practices in engineering and construction are not that
well established or up to the professional mark like in Australia. So internship back in the
country wasn’t that smooth as it was expected. During working on a project, I noticed that
concrete on the ceiling of the slab was flaking onto the floor because the slab concrete when
mixed was poorly vibrated and poured without any curing. Realizing the danger, I immediately
informed the sub-contractor in charge of the work so that he fixes the mistake without any
possible hazards. But to my astonishment and disbelief, almost all the workers laughed at my
concerns and mentioned it was a very small issue, they are quite experienced with these kind of
works and that I did not need to worry about this much. One of them even snorted and said
that I am just an intern here and I do need to command them orders just because I am studying
in a country like Australia. I was genuinely indignant and frustrated that he could say something
like that to me but I remained calm and thought about it patiently. I decided to inform the
incident to my superior - the project manager. The following day he himself inspected the
affected area and immediately instructed the workers to fix the slab and to mix the concrete
properly.
Such experience has given me a major lesson in the field of professional practice within
intercultural and global contexts. Despite being wrong and rather than admitting their mistake
the workers simply ignored me just because they thought they had more experience than me.
On the other hand, I was extremely happy and sort of relieved that the threat associated was
eliminated and nobody was harm during the construction. I asked my project manager that why
they did not follow my advice. He replied that while communicating with such people the
approach must be polite and simple. He advised that rather than giving them command ask for
their help – e.g. I could have asked them that whether there was any danger regarding the
faulty slab and concrete mixture rather than simply saying they made a mistake and should fix
immediately. I realised my mistake and noted this for my future professional practice.
Communication is an important tool in an Engineer’s day to day work. Without good
communication skills the critical elements in designing and construction may become
endangered and they are as equally important as basic intellectual skills. [1]
