1 Scope
This technical instruction (TA) applies to the following Jenbacher Gas Engines:
• Type 2 engines

2 Purpose
This technical instruction (TA) facilitates the selection of lubricating oils, tested for suitability in Jenbacher
Gas Engines.

3 Additional information

This Technical Instruction applies to new and overhauled engines, as of the date of issue. Lubricating oils
listed in this version are also released for engines built or overhauled before this version.
Lubricating oils no longer listed in this version remain released for engines that were listed before this
revision of the Technical Instruction was issued, as long as a Service Bulletin (SB) does not state
otherwise.

INNIO Jenbacher GmbH & Co OG closed a long-term development contract with ExxonMobil in 2019,
which allowed the introduction of Jenbacher N Oil 40.

The limit values to be used for Jenbacher N Oil 40 are specified in TA 1000-0099B.

4 Effects on the lubricating oil and the oil service life

Fuel gases contain trace and accompanying substances that can impact the formation of deposits in the
combustion chamber, the acid attack on components, and wear.
Based on current experience, the following harmful substances have the greatest impacts on the
lubricating oil and thus on the service life of the oil:
• Chlorine, fluoride, sulphur cause the lubricating oil to acidify.
• Organic silicon compounds can cause abnormal wear.

Lubricating oil for type 2, 3, 4 and 6 Jenbacher
gas engines

Accordingly, fuel gases can be divided into the following classes:

• Class A: Natural gas and gases that permanently comply with the restrictions regarding trace
and accompanying substances in accordance with TA 1000-0300
Natural gas, associated petroleum gas, abandoned mine methane gas, biogas (sulphur <
200 mg/10 kWh).
• Class B: Gases containing acid-forming trace substances or trace substances that primarily
affect the oil condition
Biogas, sewage gas.
• Class C: Gases containing acid-forming trace substances and additional trace substances that
cause wear
Landfill gas
• Class S: Special gases with a high probability of irregular combustion phenomena (re-
ignitions, glow ignitions) which require special approval
Hydrogen fuel gases, thermoselect gases and steel mill gases as well as wood gas, syngas and
pyrolysis gases with a high hydrogen content.

Lubricating oil can lose its corrosion-protection properties as a result of impurities in the fuel gas. The
results of periodic lubricating oil analyses provide indications of fuel gas contamination. See the following

5 Lubricating oil requirements for Jenbacher gas engines

SAE 40
Additives suitable for spark-ignition gas operation.
Approval procedure in accordance with TA 1000-0099A completed with a positive result.

6 Lubricating oil tables – selection overview:

6.1 Note
When using oils with an ash content of > 0.6%, increased performance of the engine components can be
achieved.
Oils with an ash content of > 0.6% in accordance with the specification are identified in a separate
column.

• A, B, C, S: Fuel gas classes, products for fuel gas class S, see chapter ⇨ Lubricating oil for

• CAT: If an oxidation catalytic converter is included in the Jenbacher scope of supply
